LAGOS, NIGERIA — Super Falcons interim coach Augustine Eguavoen says the team is targeting Olympic gold at Los Angeles 2028. He said the team must move on from their recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations disappointment.
Eguavoen spoke on Tuesday during a press briefing in Lagos. He said the Falcons must use their WAFCON exit as motivation. He said the team has the talent to compete with the best in the world.
WAFCON Disappointment
Nigeria crashed out of the 2026 WAFCON in the quarter-finals. They lost 1-0 to Cameroon. The defeat ended their hopes of winning the title.
The Falcons also failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. They lost 2-1 to South Africa in a play-off. It was the first time Nigeria would miss the tournament.
Eguavoen said the results were painful. But he said the team must look forward. “We cannot change the past. We can only learn from it. Our focus now is on the future,” he said.
Targeting LA 2028
The 2028 Olympic Games will hold in Los Angeles. Eguavoen said the Falcons are aiming for gold. He said the team will begin preparations immediately.
“We have the players. We have the talent. What we need is proper preparation and the right mindset. Our target is gold at LA 2028,” Eguavoen stated.
Building the Team
Eguavoen said he will rebuild the squad. He said he will give opportunities to young players. He also said experienced players will be retained to provide leadership.
“We need a mix of youth and experience. The young players will bring energy and hunger. The experienced players will provide stability and guidance,” he said.
Call for Support
Eguavoen called on the Nigeria Football Federation to support the team. He said the Falcons need better funding and preparation. He also urged fans to continue supporting the team.
“We need the support of everyone. The NFF, the government, the fans. With their support, we can achieve our目标,” he said.
What Happens Next
The Falcons will regroup for their next international fixtures. Eguavoen said the team will play friendly matches. These will help him assess the squad and build chemistry.
For now, the focus is on LA 2028. The journey begins now.
