Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has reaffirmed his confidence in Enzo Fernandez, insisting that the club are happy with the Argentine midfielder despite continued speculation over his future at Stamford Bridge.

Fernandez has been linked with a possible move away from Chelsea, with Manchester City reportedly showing interest in the 25 year old World Cup winner. However, Chelsea’s position remains clear: the midfielder is not for sale this summer.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham, Alonso dismissed suggestions that Fernandez could be on his way out of the club and revealed that the midfielder remains focused on preparing for the new campaign.

“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday,” Alonso said.

The Spaniard’s comments provide a strong indication that Fernandez remains an important part of his plans as he begins his first Premier League season in charge of Chelsea.

Fernandez has experienced considerable speculation during the summer, with reports linking him with a potential transfer despite his importance to the Chelsea midfield.

The situation became more significant after the deadline for a formal bid passed without Manchester City submitting an offer. Chelsea subsequently maintained that the Argentine would remain at Stamford Bridge.

For Alonso, the priority is now preparing Fernandez and the rest of the squad for the demands of the new season rather than allowing transfer rumours to become a distraction.

The Chelsea manager was particularly pleased with the midfielder’s attitude since returning to the squad following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“He has integrated really well since rejoining the group after the World Cup and is training really well,” Alonso said.

“I see him with a really good attitude and that’s what we want.”

Those comments will come as a boost to Chelsea supporters who have been concerned about the possibility of losing one of the club’s most important midfielders.

Fernandez remains a central figure in Chelsea’s plans because of his passing ability, energy and capacity to influence matches from midfield.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the Argentine has faced the enormous expectations that come with being one of the club’s biggest investments. His performances have at times attracted criticism, but his quality and experience at international level continue to make him an important asset.

His role could become even more significant under Alonso.

The former Real Madrid coach is expected to demand a high level of tactical discipline and intensity from his players, while also encouraging greater control and creativity in possession.

Fernandez’s ability to operate in different midfield roles could therefore make him particularly useful to the new manager.

The midfielder has already demonstrated his willingness to take responsibility. During Chelsea’s pre season preparations, he was handed the captain’s armband during the friendly victory over Real Sociedad, another indication of the trust placed in him by the club.

That leadership responsibility could become increasingly important as Chelsea attempt to rebuild under Alonso.

The club are entering a new era after another turbulent period, and the manager has made it clear that he wants to establish a strong foundation before challenging for major honours.

Keeping key players such as Fernandez is likely to be central to that process.

Chelsea will begin their Premier League campaign against Fulham, giving Alonso an immediate opportunity to assess how quickly his ideas have been absorbed by the squad.

Fernandez is expected to be part of the manager’s plans for the fixture, provided he is selected and fully fit.

The opening match will also provide an early indication of the midfielder’s position within Alonso’s system.

While transfer speculation may continue until the window closes on September 1, the current message from Chelsea is unmistakable.

Fernandez remains part of the club’s plans.

Manchester City’s reported interest could still create headlines in the coming days, but Chelsea’s refusal to entertain a formal approach suggests that a transfer is unlikely unless the situation changes dramatically.

For Fernandez himself, the best response to the speculation will be on the pitch.

The Argentine has the opportunity to begin the new campaign by demonstrating why Alonso and Chelsea are determined to keep him.

His relationship with the new manager will also be closely monitored.

Alonso has already spoken privately with Fernandez and publicly expressed his desire to work with him, reinforcing the impression that the midfielder is viewed as an important component of the new Chelsea project.

That confidence could help Fernandez approach the season with greater stability after a summer dominated by transfer rumours.

Chelsea supporters will hope the situation is now settled and that the midfielder can concentrate entirely on football.

The club have invested heavily in building a squad capable of competing at the highest level, and Alonso will need his most talented players available if Chelsea are to challenge for European qualification and eventually return to the Premier League title race.

Fernandez’s experience, technical ability and international pedigree make him one of those players.

For now, Alonso has made his position clear.

Chelsea are happy with Enzo Fernandez, the player is preparing for the new season and there is no indication from the club that they want to sell him.

With the Premier League campaign about to begin, attention will now shift from transfer speculation to Fernandez’s performances on the pitch.

If the midfielder can reproduce his best form and become a key figure in Alonso’s Chelsea side, the current transfer talk could soon become little more than a memory.
