Ozonna Soludo, son of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has reacted to Apple’s latest iPhone launch, questioning the need for the company to release new phone upgrades every year.
“Apple phones should make their upgrades every three years, not every year,” Ozonna said in a reaction to the latest iPhone launch.
Apple recently unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with the new models featuring upgrades to the camera system, processor, battery performance and thermal management. The Pro models are scheduled to become available from September 18, 2026, following pre-orders from September 12.
Ozonna’s comment appears to reflect a growing debate among consumers over the pace of smartphone upgrades and whether users need to replace their devices whenever a new generation is released.
Apple’s 2026 launch is also unusual because the company has split its iPhone 18 rollout. While the Pro models and its foldable iPhone are arriving in September, the standard iPhone 18 is expected to follow in spring 2027.
The latest Pro models start at $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max in the United States, making the question of how frequently consumers should upgrade particularly relevant for buyers looking to get more value from their devices.
Ozonna’s remark has since added a Nigerian perspective to the wider conversation around annual smartphone launches, with some consumers likely to agree that longer upgrade cycles could make more financial sense, particularly when existing devices continue to meet everyday needs.
