Former Liverpool and Bournemouth winger Jordon Ibe has avoided a prison sentence after being convicted of assaulting his former girlfriend during an argument in south London.
The 30 year old former England Under 21 international was sentenced to a 12 month community order by magistrate Brij Kalia at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Friday. The sentence requires Ibe to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and take part in 27 days of rehabilitation activity. He was also ordered to pay £764, made up of a £114 surcharge and £650 in court costs.
The incident involved Ibe and his former partner, Amie Mayson, outside her home in Lambeth, south London, on December 14. The court heard that Mayson had confronted the former footballer over money she claimed he owed her, leading to a heated argument between the pair.
During the confrontation, Ibe grabbed Mayson by the hair and pulled one of her braids from her head. The incident left her with a bald patch, according to evidence presented before the court. The case was brought under a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Ibe initially denied the allegation when he appeared in court in March. However, he later changed his plea and admitted the offence in July, accepting responsibility for what had happened.
Representing himself during Friday’s sentencing hearing, Ibe expressed remorse and acknowledged that his actions were wrong.
The former footballer told the court that he had made a serious mistake and said he had been forced to reflect on his behaviour. He also indicated that although he could not undo what had happened, he was prepared to accept responsibility for his future actions.
The court also heard about the effect of the incident on Mayson. In a victim impact statement, she explained that the assault had affected her physically and emotionally, particularly her confidence, self esteem and sense of self worth.
Mayson said the injury served as a continuing reminder of the incident and had left her experiencing fear and emotional distress. Despite the impact of the assault, she also expressed compassion towards Ibe and said forgiveness had become part of her personal healing process.
Prosecutors told the court that Ibe and Mayson had been involved in an on and off relationship since late 2024. The dispute on December 14 escalated after the conversation about money.
The case marks another difficult chapter in the career of a player who was once regarded as one of English football’s promising young talents.
Ibe began his professional career with Wycombe Wanderers before joining Liverpool as a teenager. He developed through the club’s system and eventually made 58 appearances for the senior side, according to court reports. He also spent time away from Anfield on loan at Birmingham City and Derby County before completing a permanent move to Bournemouth.
At Bournemouth, Ibe established himself as a Premier League player and was regarded as one of the exciting young attackers in English football. He also represented England at several youth levels, including the Under 21 team.
However, his career subsequently suffered a significant decline. After leaving Bournemouth, he had limited opportunities at Derby County and spent periods away from top level football. In recent years, he returned to non league football before securing a move to Bulgarian First League club Lokomotiv Sofia in November 2025.
His time in Bulgaria ended in June 2026, according to reports, leaving the former Liverpool player facing an uncertain future both on and off the pitch.
The latest court case now adds another serious setback to Ibe’s post Liverpool career. Although he avoided immediate imprisonment, the community order places specific obligations on him, including unpaid work and rehabilitation activities.
The sentence also brings the legal proceedings to an end following months of court appearances and the eventual guilty plea.
For Ibe, the focus will now be on complying with the conditions imposed by the court and taking responsibility for his actions, while his football career remains uncertain.
The case has also highlighted the wider consequences of domestic violence and the lasting physical and emotional effects such incidents can have on victims. Mayson’s statement to the court demonstrated that the impact of an assault can extend well beyond the immediate physical injury.
Ibe’s fall from highly rated Liverpool youngster to a former professional facing a court sentence represents a dramatic change from the trajectory many expected when his career began. His next steps, both personally and professionally, will now determine whether he can rebuild his life after another challenging period.
