GLASGOW, SCOTLAND — A former Police Scotland sergeant, Campbell Petrie, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was convicted of raping two women over a 17-year period.
The sentence was handed down on Thursday at the High Court in Glasgow. Petrie, 58, had denied the charges. But a jury found him guilty.
The Crimes
Petrie abused the women between 2000 and 2017. The attacks occurred at various locations in Glasgow and elsewhere. The court heard that he used his position as a police officer to intimidate his victims.
One of the victims was a woman he met through his work. The other was his partner at the time. Both suffered years of abuse.
Victims’ Statements
The victims read statements in court. They described the lasting impact of the abuse. They said it had affected their mental health and their ability to trust.
“I have lived in fear for years. He used his power to control me. I am glad he has been brought to justice,” one victim said.
Judge’s Remarks
The judge described Petrie’s actions as “appalling.” He said Petrie had abused his position of trust. He said the sentence reflected the seriousness of the crimes.
“You were a police officer. You were supposed to protect the public. Instead, you preyed on vulnerable women. Your actions were a betrayal of everything you were supposed to stand for,” the judge said.
Police Scotland’s Response
Police Scotland said it had cooperated fully with the investigation. A spokesperson said the force was committed to tackling violence against women.
“We are sorry for the pain these women endured. We hope this conviction brings them some closure. We will continue to work to ensure that no one is above the law,” the spokesperson said.
What This Means
The case highlights the problem of domestic abuse and sexual violence. It also shows that perpetrators can be held accountable, regardless of their position.
It also raises questions about how police forces handle allegations against their own officers. Victims often face barriers when reporting abuse by police officers.
What Happens Next
Petrie will serve his sentence. He will also be placed on the sex offenders’ register. He may face further action from Police Scotland.
For now, the victims have received justice. They said they hoped their story would encourage others to speak out. They urged victims of abuse not to suffer in silence.
