EXPOSED: INEC Voter Register Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged AI-Generated Image

Concerns have emerged over Nigeria’s preliminary voters’ register after a social media post alleged that an AI-generated image appeared in multiple voter records ahead of the 2027 general elections.

DDM has been following developments surrounding the register and previously reported that INEC had made the preliminary list available online for public inspection.

Alleged Image Duplication

The circulating screenshot reportedly shows the same image attached to multiple voter entries. If confirmed, the duplication could point to a problem requiring investigation.

However, a repeated photograph does not automatically mean the names attached to it are fictitious. The image’s origin and the circumstances surrounding its use must be established before conclusions can be drawn.

As of October 27, no independent technical assessment confirming the allegation or specific INEC response addressing it was available in the material reviewed for this report.

Public Inspection Ahead of 2027 Elections

INEC displayed the preliminary register at registration areas nationwide from October 9 to 15, 2026, allowing voters to check their details and raise objections.

The commission later made the register available online to widen public access. It is processing claims and objections ahead of the planned publication of the final register on December 15, 2026.

The exercise gives voters and other stakeholders an opportunity to identify errors and report suspected irregularities before the final list is certified.

Verification Under Scrutiny

The allegation has drawn attention to how INEC verifies voter photographs, personal details and biometric information.

The commission should clarify how it detects duplicate photographs, checks voter identities and investigates suspicious entries. If the image duplication is confirmed, INEC should explain how it occurred and what corrective steps will follow.

Biometric accreditation and electronic transmission of election results also serve important roles in electoral integrity, but neither independently proves that every entry in the voters’ register is authentic.

DDM Calls for Clarification

The allegation raises a legitimate issue for public scrutiny, but it should not be treated as proof that INEC generated fictitious voter records.

INEC should examine the specific entries and provide a clear explanation of its findings. Any confirmed errors should be corrected before the final register is published.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the accuracy of the voters’ register remains essential.

The allegation has not been independently verified, while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not responded to this claims.
