The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) Nigeria, an environmental rights and human rights advocacy organization, expresses deep concern over the worsening environmental and ecological impact arising from the deplorable condition abandoned and incompleted Ohazu Road, Umuagbai Road, Nneato Road, Obioha Road, and Crystal Park Road by Obohia in Aba, Abia State.
Beyond the hardship faced by residents and commuters,
FENRAD notes that the continued deterioration of these roads has created significant environmental challenges, including persistent flooding, soil erosion, blocked drainage channels, stagnant water accumulation, and the degradation of the surrounding ecosystem.
The organization observes that the abandonment and delayed completion of critical road projects, particularly along Obohia Road and Crystal Park Road by Obohia, have left residents vulnerable to severe flooding during the rainy season. Large volumes of runoff water now inundate residential areas, destroy property, weaken road foundations, and accelerate environmental degradation within affected communities.
FENRAD is particularly alarmed by the ecological implications of the situation. Stagnant floodwaters have become breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes and other vectors, posing serious public health risks.
The uncontrolled flow of stormwater is also contributing to gully formation, loss of topsoil, destruction of vegetation, and the disruption of natural drainage patterns that sustain the local environment.
Furthermore, the persistent flooding threatens nearby homes, businesses, and public infrastructure while increasing the likelihood of water contamination and the spread of waterborne diseases.
These conditions undermine environmental sustainability and negatively affect the quality of life of residents.
As an environmental rights organization, FENRAD stresses that access to a safe and healthy environment is a fundamental rights
The organization therefore calls on the Abia State Government to urgently address the environmental emergency by ensuring the speedy completion of the abandoned Obohia Road and Crystal Park Road projects, rehabilitating affected roads, and implementing sustainable drainage and flood-control measures
FENRAD also calls on the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency and relevant government agencies to undertake an immediate environmental assessment of the affected areas and develop long-term solutions to mitigate flooding, erosion, and ecological degradation.
The organization describes this intervention as a “Save a Soul, Save the Environment” appeal, emphasizing that failure to act promptly could result in further environmental damage, increased public health challenges, destruction of livelihoods, and avoidable loss of lives and property.
FENRAD urges all relevant authorities to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves in the interest of environmental protection, public safety, and sustainable development
