The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.
In a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the celebration.
Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the occasion to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
He said peace and stability were essential for national development and called on citizens to emulate the country’s founding fathers by contributing to the building of a better Nigeria.
The minister also expressed confidence that Nigeria’s diversity and collective determination would support the development of a stronger and more prosperous country.
He assured Nigerians that the government would continue to strengthen national security, improve public safety and create an environment where citizens can live and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
