Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Venezuela 1-0 in a tense quarter-final encounter in Morocco.
Captain Azeezat Oduntan emerged as Nigeria’s match-winner after converting a dramatic late penalty in the 89th minute to send the Flamingos into the last four, where they will face Brazil for a place in the final.
The encounter, played at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé on Sunday, November 1, saw Nigeria dominate much of the contest but struggle to find a breakthrough against a stubborn Venezuelan defence.
Determined to secure an early advantage, the Flamingos started brightly and immediately put pressure on their opponents, with Tosin Rafiu, Mary Dunstan and Oluebube Umejiaku leading Nigeria’s attacking efforts.
Nigeria came close to opening the scoring in the 19th minute when Rafiu unleashed a powerful effort towards goal, but Venezuela goalkeeper Valeria Rebanales produced an important save to deny the Nigerian forward.
Rebanales continued to frustrate the Flamingos as she remained alert to Nigeria’s attacking movements, making further interventions to keep her side in the contest.
Mary Dunstan also threatened in the first half, but Venezuela’s defensive organisation and the goalkeeper’s impressive performance ensured the teams went into the interval without a goal.
The South Americans offered limited attacking danger, relying mainly on counter-attacks as Nigeria continued to control possession and search for an opening.
Despite their attacking dominance, the Flamingos struggled to turn their opportunities into goals after the restart, with Venezuela maintaining its defensive discipline and appearing increasingly comfortable as the match approached its closing stages.
Nigeria head coach Akeem Busari subsequently introduced Precious Oscar for Oluwakemi Adegbuyi in an attempt to inject fresh energy into the attack and find a way past the Venezuelan defence.
With the encounter seemingly heading towards a penalty shootout, Nigeria finally found the breakthrough in the closing minutes.
Top scorer Oluebube Umejiaku was brought down inside the penalty area in the 88th minute, prompting the referee to award the Flamingos a spot-kick.
However, the decision was initially subjected to a VAR review, briefly delaying Nigeria’s opportunity to take the lead.
Following the review, the referee upheld the penalty decision, handing the Nigerian youngsters a crucial opportunity to secure qualification without going through a shootout.
Captain Oduntan stepped forward and calmly converted from the spot in the 89th minute, sending the Nigerian bench and supporters into celebrations.
The late strike proved decisive as Venezuela struggled to find a response, with the Flamingos holding on to their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
Nigeria’s attacking superiority was also reflected in the match statistics, recording 18 shots compared to Venezuela’s six and winning nine corners, while their opponents failed to register a single corner.
The victory represents another important milestone in the Flamingos’ campaign as they continue their pursuit of a maiden FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
Nigeria’s journey to the quarter-finals has been impressive, particularly after recovering from a 2-1 opening defeat to Poland in the group stage.
The team responded with victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea before defeating Mexico 2-1 in the round of 16 to reach the quarter-finals.
Their latest victory over Venezuela has now placed them among the competition’s final four teams.
The Flamingos will next face Brazil in the semi-finals on Wednesday, November 4, after the South American side secured a 2-1 victory over China in their quarter-final encounter.
The upcoming meeting presents another major test for Busari’s youngsters, who will need to maintain their attacking confidence and defensive organisation against a Brazilian side equally determined to reach the final.
With a place in the final now within reach, Nigeria will be hoping to carry the momentum from their dramatic victory over Venezuela into Wednesday’s encounter as they continue their pursuit of a historic world title.
