Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, produced a dominant two-legged performance to secure a place in the final qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Guinea 11-0 on aggregate.

The Nigerian side completed the emphatic qualification with a 6-0 victory in the second leg played at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, following a 5-0 win in the first leg in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The result underlined Nigeria’s superiority across both matches and reinforced their status as one of Africa’s strongest youth women’s football teams.

From the opening whistle of the return leg, the Flamingos showed intent, discipline and attacking quality, leaving Guinea with little opportunity to settle into the game.

Early Pressure Sets the Tone for Nigeria

The Flamingos began the match with high intensity, pressing aggressively and controlling possession in the midfield. Their early dominance paid off in the 9th minute when Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring.

The goal came after a well-delivered cross from Queen Joseph, which Adegbuyi met with composure inside the box to slot past the Guinean goalkeeper. The early breakthrough immediately put Nigeria in control of the tie and further extended their aggregate advantage.

Guinea attempted to respond with long passes and counterattacks, but the Nigerian defence remained organized and compact, limiting the visitors to very few clear chances.

Captain Harmony Chidi Leads from the Front

Nigeria doubled their lead in the 18th minute through team captain Harmony Chidi, who demonstrated her quality with a powerful long-range strike that beat the goalkeeper from outside the penalty area. The goal highlighted her confidence and technical ability, further energizing the home crowd.

Chidi, who also scored in the first leg, continued to influence the game with her movement and leadership in the final third, linking up effectively with the attacking line.

The Flamingos extended their advantage in the 25th minute when Queen Joseph found the back of the net. The forward finished off a well-worked attacking move involving quick passing in the final third, giving Nigeria a commanding 3-0 lead on the night and an 8-0 aggregate advantage.

First Half Dominance Continues

Nigeria refused to ease the pressure as the first half progressed. In the 32nd minute, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi scored her second goal of the match, rising highest inside the penalty area to head home from a set-piece delivery. Her brace further demonstrated her sharp positioning and aerial strength.

Just two minutes later, Harmony Chidi added her second goal of the game, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to calmly finish past the goalkeeper. Her brace confirmed her influence as the team’s attacking leader and extended Nigeria’s dominance to 5-0 on the night.

At halftime, the Flamingos were firmly in control, leading 5-0 in the match and 10-0 on aggregate. Their performance reflected excellent tactical organization, quick transitions, and clinical finishing in front of goal.

Second Half Control and Final Goal

With qualification almost secured, the Flamingos maintained control in the second half, managing the game intelligently while still creating attacking opportunities.

Coach Auwal Maude made several substitutions to rotate the squad and give more players international experience, but Nigeria’s structure remained solid. Guinea struggled to break through Nigeria’s defensive lines and rarely threatened the goalkeeper.

The Flamingos eventually added a sixth goal in the 70th minute through substitute Precious Oscar. She finished calmly after a well-timed pass inside the penalty area, sealing a complete 6-0 victory on the night and an 11-0 aggregate win.

Oscar’s goal capped off a flawless performance from the Nigerian side, who demonstrated strength in all areas of the pitch throughout both legs of the tie.

Standout Goal Scorers Across Both Legs

Across the two matches, several Nigerian players delivered standout performances. Harmony Chidi finished as one of the top contributors with multiple goals, including key strikes in both legs. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi also impressed with her brace in the second leg and earlier contribution in the first match.

Queen Joseph continued her strong form with a crucial goal and several attacking contributions, while Precious Oscar’s late strike in the second leg added the finishing touch to an already dominant display.

In the first leg in Abidjan, Nigeria had already established superiority with a 5-0 victory, where Chidi scored a hat trick and Adegbuyi added another goal, putting the tie beyond Guinea’s reach before the return leg even began.

Reward and Recognition for the Team

Following the dominant performance, the Flamingos received additional motivation from football benefactor Kunle Soname, who had pledged a cash reward of ₦750,000 per goal scored in the match.

Next Challenge: Final Qualifying Round

With the victory, Nigeria’s Flamingos have advanced to the final round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled to be held in Morocco.

They will now face the Benin Republic U-17 Women’s team in what promises to be a decisive two-legged encounter for a place at the global tournament.

The Flamingos have consistently been one of Africa’s strongest teams at youth level, and their latest performance once again highlights the depth of talent within Nigeria’s women’s football structure.

The 11-0 aggregate victory over Guinea sends a strong message to future opponents and reinforces Nigeria’s ambition of maintaining dominance in African women’s youth football.

With a blend of talented scorers, disciplined defending, and strong team coordination, the Flamingos look well-positioned as they approach the final hurdle in their World Cup qualification campaign.

For Nigerian football fans, the performance represents not only a victory but also a glimpse into a promising future for women’s football in the country.
