PORTO, PORTUGAL — Former FC Porto coach Sérgio Conceição has praised Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi, recalling why he pushed for the Nigerian international’s signing and describing him as one of the most athletically gifted players he has coached.
Conceição, who managed Porto between 2017 and 2024, brought Sanusi to the Portuguese giants in 2020 from Santa Clara, and the left-back went on to become an integral part of the team that won multiple domestic titles and competed consistently in the UEFA Champions League. In an interview with Portuguese media on Sunday, Conceição reflected on his decision to sign Sanusi and the qualities that made him such an important player for the club.
“I remember when we were looking at left-backs, and I saw Zaidu play. I immediately told our sporting director that we needed to sign him,” Conceição said. “His pace, his energy, his desire to get forward — he was exactly what I wanted in that position. He was raw, yes, but he had all the tools to become a top player.”
The former coach noted that Sanusi’s speed was his most outstanding attribute, describing him as “one of the fastest players I have ever coached.” He recalled a particular match in the Champions League where Sanusi’s pace was instrumental in nullifying a dangerous opponent, and praised his ability to recover defensively and to contribute in the attacking third.
“He could run all day. He had this incredible capacity to cover ground, to overlap, to get back into position. That is a rare gift,” Conceição added. “And he was always willing to learn, always willing to work. He listened, he improved, and he earned the respect of everyone in the dressing room.”
Sanusi, 29, made over 100 appearances for Porto, winning two Primeira Liga titles, two Taça de Portugal trophies, and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. He also featured in the Champions League, where he impressed with his performances against some of Europe’s top clubs. His time at Porto established him as a regular in the Super Eagles squad, and he has been a key part of Nigeria’s defence in recent international competitions.
Conceição’s praise comes at a time when Sanusi continues to ply his trade in Portugal, having joined Estrela da Amadora after leaving Porto. Despite the change in club, the defender remains a key figure for Nigeria as the Super Eagles prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reflecting on Sanusi’s development, Conceição said he was proud of what the Nigerian had achieved and predicted he still had much more to offer. “He is a good player, a good man, and a good professional. I am happy to see him doing well, and I wish him all the best in his career,” Conceição said.
