Four people have died in a tragic accident involving several trucks on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The crash occurred early Thursday, causing heavy traffic and chaos on the busy route.
According to eyewitnesses, at least four trucks, including a fuel tanker, were involved in the collision.
Although the crash caused major damage, there was no fire outbreak recorded.
One of the trucks veered off the road and crashed through the concrete barrier of the bridge. Its front section plunged into the river below, leaving the fate of its occupants unknown as of the time of filing this report.
Sources confirmed that among the dead were a police officer, a truck driver’s assistant, and two unidentified victims. Two others, including a ‘motorboy,’ sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials and policemen quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation and direct traffic. However, police officers at the site declined to speak to journalists.
A towing van brought in to help separate the tangled trucks was also struck during the rescue effort, worsening the scene.
The accident resulted in a severe traffic jam stretching several kilometers, with stranded commuters lamenting the long delay.
As of Thursday morning, FRSC personnel were still working to remove the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow. Authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the deceased.
The Kara Bridge corridor has become notorious for frequent accidents involving trucks and tankers, sparking renewed calls for stricter traffic enforcement and road safety measures along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
