Genk Set to Offload Nigerian Winger Yira Sor Amid Summer Squad Restructuring

Belgian top flight club KRC Genk are reportedly preparing to part ways with Nigerian winger Yira Sor as part of a major squad restructuring ahead of the 2026/2027 football season.

The development comes after a challenging campaign for the Super Eagles attacker, who struggled to secure a consistent place in the starting lineup despite showing flashes of quality during the season.

Reports from Belgium suggest Genk’s management and technical crew have already begun plans to reshape the squad following the conclusion of the current campaign, with several players expected to leave the club during the summer transfer window. Among those reportedly considered surplus to requirements is the Nigerian winger, whose future at the club has become increasingly uncertain in recent months.

Club officials are believed to be focused on refreshing the team while creating room for younger players expected to form part of the club’s long term project. Sources close to the club indicate that Genk are open to listening to offers for Sor as they seek to balance the squad and improve attacking efficiency ahead of next season.

The decision marks a significant moment in Sor’s European football journey, particularly considering the high expectations that surrounded his arrival in Belgium. The Nigerian winger joined Genk from Czech side Slavia Prague in December 2022 after establishing himself as one of the most exciting young African attackers playing in Europe at the time.

Genk reportedly paid around €6.5 million to secure the winger’s signature, handing him a long term contract after he impressed with his speed, dribbling ability, and attacking instincts in the Czech league and European competitions.

His arrival generated excitement among supporters, many of whom believed the Nigerian had the potential to become one of the club’s most influential attacking players. However, despite occasional impressive performances, Sor struggled to fully establish himself as a regular starter.

Injuries, tactical changes, and intense competition for places limited the winger’s ability to maintain momentum during his stay at the club. While he continued to contribute in certain matches, he often found himself rotating between the starting lineup and substitute appearances.

The situation became more noticeable during the championship play off phase of the Belgian Pro League season, where Sor made only limited appearances from the bench as Genk battled for domestic honours. His reduced playing time further increased speculation regarding his long term future at the club.

Across all competitions this season, the Nigerian international scored six goals and provided two assists in 39 appearances. Although the numbers reflected moments of attacking quality, reports suggest the club expected greater consistency and productivity considering the financial investment made in the player.

Football analysts believe the winger’s style of play still makes him an attractive option for clubs seeking pace and creativity in wide attacking areas. Interest is already believed to be emerging from clubs in Turkey and other European leagues ahead of the summer transfer window.

Many observers also believe a move away from Belgium could provide Sor with an opportunity to revive his career in a new environment where he can play more regularly and regain confidence.

Before moving to Belgium, the Lagos born footballer steadily built his reputation through determination and impressive performances across different leagues. Sor began his football development at Family Love Academy before continuing his growth at 36 Lion Football Club in Nigeria, a system known for producing talented young players.

His move to Europe started with Czech club Baník Ostrava, where his performances quickly attracted attention. He later joined Slavia Prague and became one of the standout players during the club’s UEFA Europa Conference League campaign.

Sor earned widespread recognition after producing memorable performances against major European opponents, including Turkish giants Fenerbahçe. His displays in continental competitions convinced Genk to move aggressively for his signature.

Despite uncertainty surrounding his club future, the winger recently received positive news after earning his first invitation to the Nigerian senior national team under head coach Eric Chelle. The invitation was viewed as recognition of his talent and persistence despite recent challenges at club level.

Football stakeholders in Nigeria continue to view Sor as one of the country’s technically gifted attacking players abroad. Many supporters remain optimistic that he can rediscover his best form if he secures a move that guarantees greater playing opportunities and tactical stability.

As the summer transfer market approaches, attention is now focused on the next destination for the Nigerian winger. With several clubs reportedly monitoring his situation closely, Yira Sor could soon begin a new chapter in his European career as he looks to reignite the promise that once made him one of Africa’s most highly rated young attackers.
