Nigerian golfer Godwin Okoko has secured his maiden Sunshine Development Tour title after delivering an impressive final-round performance to win the Rift Valley Championship at Nakuru Golf Club in Kenya.
Okoko held his nerve to finish ahead of Kenya’s Simon Njogu, claiming his first title on the Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing and marking an important milestone in his professional golfing career.
The Nigerian produced a five-under-par 68 in the final round on Tuesday to finish the three-round tournament with an overall score of 10-under-par 209, edging Njogu, who finished one stroke behind on nine-under-par 210.
The victory capped an impressive performance from Okoko, who maintained his composure under pressure to convert his opportunities into a tournament-winning result. His success also rewarded the hard work he has put into his game throughout the season.
Okoko’s final-round scorecard featured six birdies and a spectacular eagle on the 16th hole. He picked up birdies on the third, fourth, sixth, 10th, 11th and 17th holes, while his eagle on the 16th proved crucial in his push for the title.
Although he dropped shots on the fifth, eighth and 12th holes, the Nigerian recovered well enough to protect his advantage and finish ahead of the chasing field.
Speaking after the victory, Okoko expressed his delight at securing his first title on the tour, describing the achievement as a reward for his commitment and consistent effort throughout the season.
“I am very happy to win my first title on the Sunshine Development Tour,” Okoko said.
He added that the challenging course tested his ability to remain focused, but he was pleased with how he took advantage of key opportunities to finish strongly.
The victory, he explained, had given him additional confidence as he prepares for the next tournament on home soil in Nigeria.
Okoko’s triumph came at the eighth leg of the Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing, a competitive circuit that brings together professional golfers and elite amateurs from across the region.
The tournament, sponsored by NCBA Bank, offered a total prize purse of two million Kenyan shillings, alongside valuable Order of Merit points and opportunities for players to advance their careers.
For Okoko, the win came with a financial reward of KSh400,000 and 210 Order of Merit points, providing a significant boost to his campaign on the development circuit.
The Sunshine Development Tour serves as an important pathway for golfers seeking to progress to the main Sunshine Tour. Strong performances can help players improve their standing on the Order of Merit and strengthen their opportunities to compete at a higher level.
Okoko’s breakthrough victory therefore represents more than a single tournament success. It gives the Nigerian professional a valuable platform from which to build on his performances and pursue further opportunities on the international circuit.
Kenya’s Njogu finished second after producing a competitive final round of his own. The Golf Park Golf Club player recorded birdies on the fifth, eighth, 10th, 11th and 16th holes to finish on nine-under-par 210.
Njogu earned KSh214,000 and 172 Order of Merit points for his runner-up finish. Despite missing out on the title by a single stroke, he acknowledged that his performance had provided positives to carry into the next tournament.
Edwin Mudanyi, who began the final round as the overnight leader, had to settle for third place after struggling during the opening holes.
Mudanyi dropped shots on the first, third and fourth holes, making it difficult to maintain his position at the top of the leaderboard. Although he recovered with birdies later in the round, consecutive bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes ended his hopes of catching Okoko.
He finished on six-under-par 213, three strokes behind the eventual champion.
Dismas Indiza finished fourth on a reported total of 214, while Greg Snow of Muthaiga Golf Club placed fifth on 215. John Kagiri completed the top six with a score of 218.
The championship attracted professional golfers and elite amateurs competing for prize money, ranking points and opportunities to advance their careers. Professionals were able to earn points towards the Official World Golf Ranking, while eligible amateur players could compete for World Amateur Golf Ranking points.
With his maiden title now secured, Okoko will return to Nigeria for the next event on the Sunshine Development Tour calendar, the Alpha Bravo Golf Classic, scheduled to take place at Lakowe Lakes Golf Estate from November 18 to 21, 2026.
The home event will give him an opportunity to build on his Kenyan success in front of Nigerian golf fans and continue his pursuit of further victories.
After demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure in Nakuru, Okoko will be looking to carry that momentum into the next stage of the season. His breakthrough in Kenya has provided a strong foundation for his ambitions, with the Nigerian now having his first Sunshine Development Tour title to his name.
