GOMBE, Nigeria — The Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command, has trained members of the 2026 Batch C Stream I of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on fire prevention and emergency response as part of efforts to improve public safety.
The sensitisation exercise took place at the temporary NYSC orientation camp in Amada, Gombe State, where the corps members received guidance on identifying fire hazards, preventing outbreaks and responding appropriately during emergencies.
According to a report by The PUNCH published on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Assistant Superintendent of Fire II Aliyu Ibrahim delivered the lecture, which focused on common causes of fire outbreaks, preventive measures and the safe use of electrical appliances.
The programme also emphasised the importance of taking appropriate action when a fire occurs to reduce the risk of injuries, deaths and damage to property.
The initiative reflects the Federal Fire Service’s broader responsibility to prevent and control fires, provide public education and improve emergency preparedness.
Training Focuses On Fire Prevention
During the session, Ibrahim explained measures that individuals could adopt to reduce fire risks in their homes, workplaces and communities.
The sensitisation covered common fire hazards and precautions involving electrical appliances, highlighting the importance of responsible use and early identification of potential dangers.
Electrical faults, unsafe connections and improperly used appliances can contribute to fire incidents. Regular checks, safe electrical practices and prompt attention to warning signs can help reduce these risks.
The training also reinforced the importance of understanding how to respond when a fire breaks out, including raising the alarm, alerting emergency responders and avoiding actions that could expose people to further danger.
Such awareness is particularly important in residential buildings, public facilities and other shared environments where a fire can threaten several people at once.
Corps Members Urged To Spread Safety Awareness
The Federal Fire Service urged the corps members to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice and share fire safety information with people in their host communities throughout their service year.
The command said public education remained an important part of preventing fire outbreaks and protecting lives and property.
By sharing practical safety information, corps members can help households, businesses and community groups recognise hazards and understand the importance of preventive measures.
The programme also presents an opportunity for corps members to contribute to community development beyond their primary assignments by promoting safer practices in the places where they live and work.
Fire Service Reaffirms Public Safety Commitment
The Gombe State Command reiterated its commitment to public fire safety education and encouraged residents to adopt preventive measures.
The Federal Fire Service identifies prevention, training, enforcement, public enlightenment and emergency preparedness as key elements of its mandate to protect lives and property.
The agency also works to control and extinguish fires and mitigate the impact of emergencies.
The latest training in Amada forms part of efforts to build awareness among young people and strengthen the role of community members in reducing fire risks.
Residents Advised To Take Precautions
The command advised residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions in their homes, workplaces and communities.
Basic measures include avoiding overloaded electrical sockets, switching off appliances when appropriate, keeping escape routes clear and ensuring that people know how to contact emergency responders.
When a fire occurs, people should prioritise their safety, alert others and seek help from the appropriate emergency services rather than attempting dangerous firefighting without the necessary training or equipment.
The Federal Fire Service maintains that public awareness and preparedness are essential to reducing the impact of fire incidents.
Through its engagement with NYSC members, the Gombe command is seeking to extend fire safety knowledge beyond the orientation camp and encourage a stronger culture of prevention throughout the state.
