Gombe Unions Issue 14-Day Ultimatum Over Unpaid Salaries

GOMBE, NIGERIA — The Joint Union of Gombe State Tertiary Institutions (JOUGTIN) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Gombe State Government to address outstanding salary, promotion and welfare-related issues, warning that failure to resolve the disputes could trigger an indefinite strike across the state’s public tertiary institutions.

The ultimatum comes amid growing concerns among workers in Gombe’s tertiary education sector over what union members describe as prolonged failures to meet agreed employment and welfare obligations. The unions have demanded urgent government intervention, with the dispute threatening to further disrupt academic and administrative activities in institutions across the state.

The development also follows a protest by workers in Gombe’s public tertiary institutions over the non-implementation of the consolidated N70,000 national minimum wage, alongside other outstanding salary and welfare entitlements. Workers took their grievances to the streets on Tuesday, intensifying pressure on the state government to address the issues affecting employees.

According to reports, the Joint Union of Gombe State Tertiary Institutions is demanding action on several outstanding matters affecting its members. These include unpaid salaries and promotion-related entitlements, as well as broader welfare concerns that the unions say have remained unresolved despite previous engagements with the government.

The unions’ warning places additional pressure on the state government to reach an agreement before the expiration of the 14-day deadline. If negotiations fail, the unions have threatened to commence an indefinite strike, potentially affecting teaching, examinations, administrative services and other activities within the affected institutions.

The latest dispute adds to wider labour tensions in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, where unions have increasingly raised concerns over unpaid entitlements, implementation of agreements and staff welfare. Earlier this month, lecturers at state-owned universities in several states, including Gombe, commenced indefinite industrial action over unresolved welfare and agreement-related issues.

The situation in Gombe is therefore being closely watched by students, parents and education stakeholders, many of whom are concerned about the impact another prolonged disruption could have on the academic calendar. A strike affecting tertiary institutions could delay lectures, examinations, graduation processes and other academic activities, depending on how broadly the action is implemented.

For workers, however, the unions’ demands centre on the need for government to honour its obligations and address what they regard as persistent welfare challenges. The N70,000 minimum wage issue has become particularly significant as workers seek the implementation of the nationally approved wage structure and relief from rising living costs.

The unions are expected to use the 14-day period to push for negotiations with the state government while giving authorities an opportunity to address the outstanding demands. The government, meanwhile, faces the challenge of preventing the dispute from escalating into another prolonged shutdown of tertiary education activities.

As the deadline approaches, attention will remain focused on whether both sides can reach an agreement and avert industrial action. For students and institutions already affected by disruptions elsewhere in the sector, a negotiated settlement would provide an opportunity to maintain academic activities and prevent further uncertainty.

The warning also highlights the broader importance of sustained dialogue between state governments and education-sector unions. With salary payments, promotions, minimum wage implementation and welfare entitlements at the centre of the dispute, stakeholders will be watching closely for concrete steps from the Gombe State Government before the ultimatum expires.
