Suspected gunmen have killed two farmers in separate attacks on Takkas community, Fier Ward, Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in the area.
According to sources, the victims were ambushed while working on their farms on Sunday and Monday.
The member representing Pankshin North Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dewan Gabriel, confirmed the attacks, saying one farmer was killed on Sunday, while the second was murdered on Monday evening.
“They were ambushed on their farms. One corpse has been deposited at the General Hospital, Pankshin, while the other was taken to a Christian hospital in the area,” he said.
The killings have heightened fear among residents, many of whom are now reluctant to return to their farms despite the peak of the farming season.
Condemning the attacks, Gabriel described the killings as barbaric, senseless and unacceptable.
He expressed sympathy to the bereaved families, the people of Takkas community and the entire Fier Ward, while calling on security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible.
The lawmaker also pledged to work with security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure a thorough investigation and prevent a recurrence.
He urged residents to remain calm, obey the law and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
