Gunmen attack Imo Community, killed dozens, injured many
DDM NEWS
Gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), attacked Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno communities in Arondizuogu and Ideato North local government areas of Imo State on Friday, July 25, 2025.
The attack, which occurred between 10 pm and 11 pm, resulted in the deaths of over 12 people, with several others critically injured.
The victims included shop owners, customers, and passersby who were shot at by the gunmen operating on a motorcycle.
While the police confirmed over seven deaths, eyewitnesses reported up to 12 bodies seen in the affected communities, with many more injured.
The gunmen shot sporadically, leaving several villagers with gunshot wounds.
Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable”.
The police deployed operational and intelligence assets to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, with CP Danjuma leading a tactical unit to comb the affected areas.
The police urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, and to provide any useful information that could aid ongoing investigations .
The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in Imo State, where armed groups have been targeting security agencies, government officials, and facilities.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly accused IPOB of being responsible for attacks in the region, although the group has denied involvement.
The police reported that normalcy had returned to the affected communities after deploying security operatives and tactical teams to the area.
The police extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged them to remain strong during this difficult time .
