Gunmen Kill Scores in Benue Fresh Attacks

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has condemned a deadly attack on Saai community in Mbajir Ward, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly killed several residents and injured many others.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, was carried out by armed men the governor described as “terrorists masquerading as herdsmen.”

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Alia described the killings as a senseless and cowardly assault on innocent people, particularly at a time when farmers have returned to their ancestral lands and are actively cultivating their farms.

“This is an ugly, cowardly and unacceptable act of violence,” the governor said. “These enemies of progress are targeting our communities at a critical period when crops are growing and hopes for a successful harvest are high.”

Alia expressed sympathy to families who lost loved ones and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.

“My heart goes out to the bereaved families and all those affected by this tragedy. We stand with the people of Saai during this difficult time,” he said.

The governor directed security agencies to immediately deploy additional personnel to the affected area and neighbouring communities, launch a manhunt for those responsible, and strengthen protection for farmers and residents.

He assured citizens that his administration would not allow criminal elements to force people off their land or undermine efforts to restore peace and agricultural productivity across the state.

“We will not allow the forces of darkness to drive our people away from their homes and farmlands. This administration remains committed to building a peaceful and secure Benue,” he stated.

Alia also urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, encouraging them to report suspicious activities to security agencies.

The attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents in parts of Benue State, where communities have repeatedly come under assault from armed groups, resulting in deaths, displacement and destruction of livelihoods.
