FIFA president Gianni Infantino has fiercely defended the 2026 FIFA World Cup, accusing critics of spreading negativity and false narratives while insisting the tournament was one of the most successful editions in football history.
In a lengthy open letter published after the conclusion of the competition, Infantino said many commentators ignored the tournament’s achievements and instead focused on controversies that, in his view, failed to reflect the overall success of the month long spectacle.
The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, attracted millions of supporters from across the globe and concluded with Spain defeating Argentina in the final. Despite the football providing memorable moments, the tournament was overshadowed by debates surrounding visa restrictions, refereeing decisions, disciplinary rulings, and FIFA’s relationship with political leaders.
Infantino argued that critics had been “consumed by hate” and accused some media organizations and public figures of spreading false rumours instead of acknowledging the positive impact the tournament had on fans worldwide.
