Arsenal booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Tuesday night, with teenage sensation Max Dowman stealing the spotlight after scoring twice in an impressive individual display.
Mikel Arteta made nine changes to the side that defeated Sunderland at the weekend, giving several squad players and academy prospects an opportunity to impress. Despite the significant rotation, Arsenal started with intensity and quickly showed their attacking quality.
The visitors took control of the match in the seventh minute when Dowman produced the first major moment of the night. The 16-year-old won possession and drove directly at the Ipswich defence before exchanging passes with Eberechi Eze. Dowman then used quick footwork to beat Cedric Kipre and create space inside the penalty area before calmly slotting the ball beyond Christian Walton.

Dowman’s brace was particularly significant because it came on his first appearance of the season. At just 16 years old, he became only the second 16-year-old in Premier League history to score twice in a match, matching the feat previously achieved by Wayne Rooney in 2002.
Arsenal continued to exploit Ipswich’s defensive gaps, and the fourth goal arrived in the 58th minute.
Merino completed an outstanding individual performance when he found the net with a composed strike from the edge of the penalty area. His effort went in off the left post, leaving Walton with little chance.
At 4-0 down, Ipswich were facing a huge deficit, but the home side refused to disappear from the contest.
Two minutes after Arsenal’s fourth, Ipswich pulled a goal back through Anis Mehmeti. Jack Clarke created the opening with a dangerous run down the left before delivering the ball into the area. Mehmeti met it with a first-time finish from close range to give the home supporters something to celebrate.
The goal briefly changed the atmosphere at Portman Road. Ipswich began pushing forward with greater urgency, while Arsenal had to defend deeper and manage the game carefully.
The hosts continued searching for another opening and were eventually rewarded in stoppage time. Former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom scored in the 90+1st minute, finishing from inside the area to reduce the deficit to two goals.
However, it was too late for Ipswich to complete the comeback.
Arsenal remained composed during the closing moments and saw out the match to secure a 4-2 victory and progression to the Carabao Cup fourth round.
The result highlighted the depth available to Arteta, with the Arsenal manager able to make nine changes without preventing his team from producing an attacking performance. The biggest talking point, however, was undoubtedly Dowman.
His two goals, direct running, close control and confidence against an experienced Ipswich defence made him the standout performer on a night when Arsenal’s younger players were given an opportunity to shine.
The Gunners will now wait for the fourth-round draw, while Ipswich will turn their attention back to their league campaign.
For Arsenal, the 4-2 victory continued their strong start to the season and provided another reminder that there is considerable attacking talent developing within Arteta’s squad.
