Iran issues strict warning to US over potential Israeli nuclear site attack

Iran’s Foreign Minister, on Thursday, May 22, 2025, issued a stern warning to the United States, declaring that Washington would be held responsible if Israel were to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.
This comes after an online media report suggested that Israel might be preparing for such a strike.
The warning highlights the growing tension in the region, particularly as the U.S. and Iran prepare for another round of indirect nuclear negotiations.
The U.S., Israel’s closest ally, and Iran are scheduled to hold their fifth round of nuclear talks on Friday in Rome.
These talks come amid persistent disagreements regarding Iran’s uranium enrichment program.
The U.S. contends that Iran’s current nuclear activities could potentially lead to the development of nuclear weapons.
However, Tehran has consistently denied these allegations, maintaining that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful, civilian purposes.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi addressed a formal letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, warning against any aggressive actions by Israel.
“Iran strongly warns against any adventurism by the Zionist regime of Israel and will decisively respond to any threat or unlawful act by this regime,” Araghchi wrote.
He urged the international community to take effective measures to prevent such threats.
He warned that if no action is taken, Iran would be forced to implement “special measures” to protect its nuclear infrastructure.
Significantly, Araghchi stated that Tehran would hold the United States accountable in the event of any Israeli attack, viewing Washington as a “participant” in such an action.
He made it clear that Iran’s response would be determined by the nature and extent of the preventive steps taken by international bodies in accordance with their legal obligations.
The online media report that prompted this response cited new U.S. intelligence suggesting that Israel may be actively preparing for a strike on Iranian nuclear targets.
Israel has not confirmed any such plans.
However, senior officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have repeatedly issued threats to attack Iran’s nuclear sites if necessary to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Iran and the United States are currently engaged in a prolonged diplomatic effort to reach a new agreement that might curb Iran’s uranium enrichment activities.
This is supposedly in return for easing U.S.-imposed economic sanctions.
The previous nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), collapsed after the U.S. withdrew from the agreement in 2018.
This was under the Trump administration and reimposed sanctions on Tehran.
Israel, for its part, has consistently opposed any new deal between Washington and Tehran, arguing that it would not effectively prevent Iran from eventually acquiring nuclear weapons capability.
Adding to the heightened rhetoric, Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which reports directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued its own warning.
A spokesperson for the IRGC, Alimohammad Naini, stated that Israel would face a “devastating and decisive response” if it launched any attack on Iran.
Speaking to state media, Naini dismissed Israeli threats as miscalculations.
He emphasized that Israel underestimates the extent of both public and military support Iran could rally in the event of war.
On the same day, Supreme Leader Khamenei condemned U.S. demands for Iran to halt uranium enrichment.
He called these expectations “excessive and outrageous,” further illustrating Iran’s resistance to U.S. pressure in the nuclear negotiations.
In summary, tensions between Iran, Israel, and the U.S. are escalating, fueled by conflicting positions on Iran’s nuclear ambitions and international diplomacy.
Iran has made it clear that it will defend its nuclear facilities.
Also, it said it will view any Israeli strike, whether direct or tacitly supported by the U.S.,as an act of aggression for which both countries would be held responsible.
As diplomatic talks continue in Rome, the stakes remain high for regional and global stability.
