Islamic State Militants kill 46 Nigerien soldiers in fresh attack

On Saturday,  the Islamic State Militants in the Greater Sahara (EIGS) launched a devastating assault on Nigerien defense and security forces (SDF) in Iknewane.

Situated in the Tilia department near the Mali border, the area experienced a coordinated attack that tragically killed at least 46 soldiers.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the heavily armed assailants outnumbered and overpowered the defenders.

As a result, the militants overwhelmed the military base, destroying nine out of 16 stationed vehicles.

Furthermore, they seized weapons and ammunition, captured a dozen soldiers, and left several others missing, escalating the crisis.

In response, the Niger Armed Forces (FAN) and the National Guard (GNN) deployed a convoy of approximately 20 vehicles from Tahoua.

Their mission aims to recover the situation, locate missing personnel, and demonstrate the military’s commitment to restoring order and security.

This attack is not isolated; it follows a similar assault on September 18, 2024, when EIGS militants killed at least 24 soldiers in the same region.

The Tahoua area, particularly near the Mali border, has witnessed a sharp rise in militant violence, creating significant challenges for the Nigerien government.

The increasing attacks by armed groups in Niger’s border regions have raised serious concerns for the safety of both military and civilian populations.

Consequently, the government is intensifying efforts to address these threats, stabilize the region, and protect citizens from the growing influence of militant organizations.

Additionally, as the situation develops, the Nigerien military plans to intensify operations in the affected areas.
