BAUCHI, Nigeria — Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been honoured with the traditional title of Jigon Bauchi by the Bauchi Emirate in recognition of his contributions to democracy, peace and national unity.
The title was conferred on Jonathan by the Emir of Bauchi, Rilwanu Adamu, on Tuesday during a ceremony held at the Emir’s Palace in Bauchi metropolis.
The traditional ruler described the former president as a leader who contributed significantly to the promotion of peace and democratic values in Nigeria. He commended Jonathan for his commitment to national unity and peaceful political engagement.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed led government officials, political figures and other dignitaries to the palace for the ceremony.
Mohammed said the conferment of the title represented the Bauchi Emirate’s recognition of Jonathan’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and efforts toward strengthening national cohesion.
The governor praised the former president’s record of leadership, describing his contributions to the country as worthy of recognition. He also said the honour reflected the respect Jonathan had earned through his service to Nigeria.
Responding to the conferment, Jonathan expressed gratitude to the Emir, the Bauchi Emirate Council and residents of the state for the recognition.
The former president said he was deeply honoured by the traditional title and appreciated the significance attached to the gesture.
Jonathan also pledged to respect the customs, traditions and values of the Bauchi Emirate Council. He promised to uphold the dignity associated with the title and conduct himself in accordance with the expectations of the traditional institution.
The former president’s recognition comes as traditional institutions across Nigeria continue to honour prominent individuals for their contributions to national development, peace-building and community advancement.
The Jigon Bauchi title adds to the honours Jonathan has received since leaving office, reflecting continued recognition of his role in Nigeria’s political and democratic history.
Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 after previously serving as vice-president. His administration was particularly noted for its handling of the 2015 presidential election, when he conceded defeat to Muhammadu Buhari, a development widely cited as an important moment in Nigeria’s democratic transition.
The Bauchi ceremony brought together political leaders, traditional authorities and other stakeholders, underscoring the relationship between Nigeria’s traditional institutions and national political figures.
