Jurgen Klopp returns to Borussia Dortmund
Jurgen Klopp is set to make a sentimental return to his former club, Borussia Dortmund, to coach a farewell match for two of the team’s legendary players, Lukasz Piszczek and Jakub “Kuba” Blaszczykowski.
The special match, announced by Dortmund on Tuesday, will take place on October 15th at Signal Iduna Park, with Klopp at the helm for one night only.
The German manager, who led Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final during his seven-year tenure from 2008 to 2015, expressed his delight at being involved in the tribute to two of his former players.
“I’m honored to be a part of this special evening,” Klopp said in a statement. “Piszczek and Kuba are not only exceptional players but also outstanding individuals who have given everything for this club. I’m looking forward to being back at Signal Iduna Park and celebrating their careers with the Yellow Wall.”
Piszczek and Blaszczykowski, who have combined for over 600 appearances for Dortmund, will retire after the match, bringing an end to their illustrious careers. The farewell game promises to be an emotional occasion, with many former teammates and coaches expected to attend.
Klopp’s return to Dortmund, albeit temporary, has generated excitement among fans, who still hold the manager in high regard.
His involvement in the farewell match is seen as a fitting tribute to two of the club’s modern-day legends.
The manager left English side, Liverpool Football Club, last summer, and is spending sometime away from another long-term football job.
