JUST IN: Wabara Reveals What Will Bring Defectors Flocking Back to PDP

Former Senate President and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), Adolphus Wabara, has expressed confidence that the return of defectors to the party hinges on its ability to provide inspiring and credible leadership during its upcoming national convention.
Wabara’s message was delivered during the PDP’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, held on Thursday in Abuja.
Represented by former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, Wabara emphasized that resolving internal disputes and electing trustworthy leaders would be central to reestablishing the PDP’s position as Nigeria’s primary opposition party.
“The Board of Trustees has always supported all organs of the party, especially the governors, in promoting unity and building consensus to move the party forward,” Wabara noted in his remarks.
He acknowledged that many had cast doubt on the likelihood of the NEC meeting taking place but affirmed its legitimacy and constitutional relevance.
He also highlighted the strategic importance of the meeting ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This is a very important meeting that many believed would never happen.
“But here we are, meeting legally and constitutionally.
“The decisions we take today will send a strong message to those who are still skeptical,” he said.
Wabara projected that a successful national convention could lead to a political resurgence for the PDP.
He suggested this would bring back former members and drawing in new supporters, including those previously uninvolved in partisan politics.
“A successful convention that delivers leadership capable of inspiring confidence will cause many to return.
“Even those who have never belonged to the PDP will find reasons to join us,” he stated.
However, he did not shy away from highlighting the potential consequences of failure.
Wabara warned that a mismanaged convention could significantly harm the party’s prospects and credibility moving forward.
“Nigeria is watching and waiting.
“The outcome of this convention will significantly affect the political landscape.
“I am confident we will get it right, we must get it right.
“If we fail, God forbid, the consequences will be grave,” he cautioned.
He also called for restraint and thoughtfulness in how party members handle internal grievances.
His comments emphasized that healing and reconciliation are crucial to restoring the PDP’s reputation and political influence.
“As we work to rebuild the confidence of our friends and allies, let us be careful with our words.
“This is a process.
“Some may be hurting or feel neglected. Let’s not make it worse,” he urged.
Wabara’s message reflects broader expectations within the party that the upcoming convention could be a turning point.
His remarks underscored the importance of unity, diplomacy, and strategic planning in preparing the PDP for the 2027 general elections.
With internal divisions still lingering and former members now aligned with rival parties, the PDP faces a critical moment.
Wabara’s speech served as both a rallying cry and a warning, that only through credible, inclusive leadership can the party regain the trust of Nigerians and its footing as a national political force.
The NEC meeting comes at a time when the PDP is under pressure to reposition itself amid shifting political dynamics and growing calls for an effective opposition.
As the party looks ahead to the convention, all eyes will be on how it navigates leadership choices, reconciles differences, and presents a united front.
In conclusion, Wabara’s address, though delivered through a proxy, sent a powerful message about the party’s future.
He reveals that the PDP must choose a path of unity, credible leadership, and strategic discipline if it hopes to regain its relevance.
The national convention will be a defining moment—not just for party members but for Nigeria’s broader political direction.
