Kano Central APC stakeholders reject Shekarau’s candidature

APC Stakeholders in Kano have vehemently rejected the emergence of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau as the consensus candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial District seat.

The outright rejection was made in a petition addressed to the APC national chairman, copied to Kano State APC chairman, among others.

The petition urged the APC national leadership to conduct direct primary to elect a candidate for Kano Central zone.

“We respectfully express our grave concern surrounding the emergence of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau as the alleged consensus candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial ticket of the APC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Many party stakeholders and supporters do not consider the arrangement as a genuine concensus freely negotiated and voluntarily accepted by all aspirants,”Yan Awaki said.

The stakeholders argued that the emergence of Shekarau through the concensus arrangement has caused disaffection and frustration among members of the APC and other stakeholders of the party in the Kano Central zone.

It said such party loyalists had invested their their substantial time, resources and mobilization efforts in anticipation of transparent and direct primaries.

“We respectfully submit that direct primaries remain the most credible and democratic mechanism for resolving competing interests fairly,while strengthening the legitimacy of the eventual candidate and preserving party unity,” the stakeholders said.

They urged the APC national leadership to review the circumstances surrounding “the alleged concensus arrangement in Kano Central and ensure that all aspirants and stakeholders are treated fairly and transparently in accordance with democratic principles”

They also asked the leadership to approve the conduct of transparent and direct primaries for the Kano Central Senatorial ticket.

“We believe this remains the best path towards restoring stakeholder confidence, preserving party unity and strengthening APC’s electoral position in Kano Central, ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the group added.
