BIRNIN KEBBI, Nigeria — The Kebbi State Police Command has warned individuals and groups against blocking the Kebbi–Sokoto Federal Highway, threatening legal action against anyone involved in further obstructions.
The warning comes amid heightened security concerns in the state and renewed attention to the safety of major roads connecting communities across north-western Nigeria.
The police command said the highway must remain accessible to motorists and other road users, cautioning that actions that obstruct traffic could disrupt movement and create additional security challenges.
The command’s position underscores the importance of keeping federal highways open for commuters, commercial transport operators and emergency services.
Police Warn Against Further Blockades
The police warned that individuals or groups who deliberately block the highway could face legal consequences.
The warning is intended to discourage actions that prevent motorists from using the road and disrupt the movement of people and goods.
Federal highways serve as important transport routes for traders, farmers, businesses and residents who depend on road travel for their daily activities. Obstructions can cause delays, increase transport costs and expose road users to additional risks.
The police have therefore stressed the need for members of the public to avoid taking actions that could compromise public order or interfere with the free movement of traffic.
The command’s warning also serves as a reminder that grievances should be addressed through lawful channels rather than by obstructing public roads.
Security Concerns In Kebbi State
The warning comes as security agencies continue to confront threats in parts of Kebbi State.
On October 8, reports emerged that suspected Lakurawa militants attacked a construction site on the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway project in Gubba village, Maiyama Local Government Area. The attack reportedly killed two security personnel and a foreign national, while two civilians sustained gunshot injuries.
The incident prompted additional security measures around the affected area, with authorities working to protect residents, construction workers and other people using the route.
Although the attack on the construction site is distinct from the reported highway blockade warning, both developments highlight the importance of maintaining safe and accessible transport corridors in the state.
Security incidents affecting major roads can disrupt commercial activity and make travel more difficult for communities that depend on them.
Importance Of Keeping Federal Roads Open
The Kebbi–Sokoto corridor connects communities and supports the movement of passengers, agricultural produce and commercial goods between the two states.
A prolonged blockade could affect transport operators, traders and residents, particularly those who rely on the road for access to markets, healthcare and other essential services.
Road obstructions can also complicate the movement of security personnel responding to emergencies or conducting operations in affected areas.
For these reasons, authorities generally rely on lawful procedures to manage disputes and maintain access to public infrastructure.
The police warning signals that the command intends to respond to further obstructions through the appropriate legal process.
Residents Urged To Respect The Law
The police have cautioned against further attempts to block the highway and warned that those responsible could face prosecution.
Residents, transport operators and other road users are expected to cooperate with law enforcement officers and avoid actions that could endanger the public or disrupt traffic.
The situation also places importance on clear communication between authorities and affected communities to prevent disputes from escalating into confrontations on public roads.
As security agencies continue their operations in Kebbi State, keeping major highways accessible remains essential to protecting lives, supporting commerce and maintaining normal movement.
The police have made clear that further blockades will not be treated lightly, warning that anyone found responsible could face legal consequences.
