Super Eagles defender Kevin Akpoguma is set to continue his career in Italian football after reaching an agreement to join Serie A side Frosinone following the end of his long spell with German club Hoffenheim. The move marks a fresh beginning for the Nigerian international, who is hoping to revive his career with regular playing time after spending more than a decade in the Bundesliga.

Akpoguma’s transfer comes after his contract with Hoffenheim expired this summer, bringing an end to a memorable association with the club that helped shape him into one of Nigeria’s most experienced defenders in Europe. Frosinone, who are preparing for another demanding Serie A campaign, have moved quickly to secure the services of the versatile centre back as they strengthen their squad with experienced additions.

The 31 year old defender is expected to complete the remaining formalities before being officially unveiled by his new club in the coming days. His arrival is viewed as an important piece of business for Frosinone, who believe his experience at the highest level of European football will add stability and leadership to their defensive line.

Akpoguma leaves Germany after spending over 13 years with Hoffenheim. He joined the Bundesliga club in 2013 from Karlsruher SC and steadily progressed through the ranks before establishing himself as a key member of the senior team. During his time at the club, he also gained valuable experience on loan with Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hannover 96, helping him develop into a reliable defender capable of playing in multiple positions across the backline.

Over the years, Akpoguma made more than 200 appearances for Hoffenheim across all competitions, featuring in the Bundesliga, the DFB Pokal and European tournaments. His composure on the ball, aerial ability and tactical awareness earned him respect from teammates and coaches alike.

However, his final season at Hoffenheim proved to be frustrating as opportunities became increasingly limited. The defender struggled for regular minutes and found himself falling down the pecking order. With both parties deciding against extending his contract, a departure became the best solution for player and club.

The move to Italy offers Akpoguma a fresh environment and an opportunity to rediscover his best form. Serie A has built a reputation as one of the most tactically demanding leagues in world football, where experienced defenders often thrive. His ability to read the game, organise a defensive line and remain calm under pressure could make him an important figure for Frosinone.

For the Nigerian international, the transfer also carries significant importance beyond club football. Regular appearances in Serie A could strengthen his chances of reclaiming a consistent place in the Super Eagles squad as Nigeria continues preparations for major international competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Akpoguma switched his international allegiance from Germany to Nigeria in 2020 after representing Germany at youth level. Since making his debut for the Super Eagles, he has become one of the country’s dependable defensive options, bringing European experience and versatility to the national team.

Although competition for places in Nigeria’s defence has intensified in recent years, consistent performances in Italy could place him firmly back in contention for future national team call ups. Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has repeatedly emphasised the importance of players earning regular minutes with their clubs, making Akpoguma’s move particularly significant.

Frosinone are equally optimistic about what the defender can bring to the team. The club’s management has prioritised adding experienced professionals capable of guiding younger players through the challenges of a long Serie A season. Akpoguma fits that profile perfectly, having competed against some of Europe’s finest attackers throughout his Bundesliga career.

His arrival also strengthens the growing Nigerian presence in Italian football, where several Super Eagles stars have enjoyed successful careers over the years. Fans will be eager to see how quickly he adapts to his new surroundings and whether he can establish himself as one of the club’s defensive leaders.

The transfer represents more than just a change of clubs. It is an opportunity for Akpoguma to reset his career, embrace a new football culture and prove that he still has plenty to offer at the highest level. With his wealth of experience and determination to succeed, expectations will be high as he prepares to wear the Frosinone colours for the first time.

If he settles quickly and returns to his best form, the move could prove beneficial for both player and club, while also giving Nigerian football another experienced defender competing regularly in one of Europe’s elite leagues.
