Kuwait’s military says its air defence systems are intercepting a missile and drone attack launched by Iran amid escalating tensions between Tehran and the United States and its allies in the Middle East.
The Kuwaiti army said on Thursday that its air defences were engaging incoming threats, describing the attack as a response to what Iran considers US aggression.
“Kuwaiti air defences are currently engaging hostile missile and drone attacks following the heinous Iranian aggression,” the army said in a statement posted on X.
The reported attack came after Iran targeted US military facilities and allied positions in Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region.
Iranian state television confirmed that Tehran was carrying out strikes against US bases in Kuwait, saying the attacks were launched “in response to America’s crimes against the Iranian people.”
The latest escalation followed widespread anger in Iran after the Iranian Red Crescent reported that a US strike on Tuesday killed four people, including a child, during a wedding ceremony in southern Iran. More than 50 others were reportedly wounded.
Washington has not directly addressed the reported civilian casualties.
However, US Central Command spokesperson Tim Hawkins defended the military’s actions, saying the “US military never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC”, referring to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The latest confrontation began after the United States carried out strikes against Iranian targets on Sunday, marking the first known American attacks on Iran in several weeks.
The exchange has heightened fears of a wider regional conflict, with US allies across the Gulf and Middle East facing possible Iranian retaliation as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate.
