The Labour Party has disowned Abayomi Arabambi, who instituted a legal action against the West African Examinations Council, the National Youth Service Corps and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, over the academic records of Peter Obi.
The party said Arabambi was no longer a member of the Labour Party.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ken Asogwa, stated this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.
Asogwa said the party initially ignored reports of the case when they appeared on social media but decided to respond after mainstream newspapers published reports describing Arabambi as an LP chieftain.
He said the party would not comment on the substance of the case, adding that Obi was also no longer a member of the Labour Party.
Asogwa said Arabambi was among 25 members suspended by the party’s National Executive Council on March 18, 2026, over various alleged infractions, including anti-party activities.
He said the suspension was later ratified by the party’s National Convention, its highest decision-making organ, on April 28, 2026.
According to him, the affected members ceased to be members of the party following the ratification.
“No organ of the party has met to revisit or reverse the decision,” Asogwa said.
He added that Arabambi therefore could not have instituted the court action as a member or representative of the Labour Party.
“It is therefore against this background that the Labour Party wishes to inform the general public, and particularly the media, that Abayomi Arabambi is not a member of the Labour Party and could not have instituted any action in court as a member of the party, having long severed ties with the Labour Party,” he said.
Asogwa said any claim by Arabambi that he was acting as a chieftain or representative of the party was unauthorised.
He described such a claim as potentially amounting to impersonation.
“The matter is currently being reviewed by the Party’s lawyers for the purpose of determining the appropriate legal and other steps that may be taken, including a possible petition to the relevant law enforcement authorities,” he said.
The LP spokesman, however, clarified that the statement was only to establish Arabambi’s status in the party and did not affect the validity of the claims he had brought before the court concerning Obi’s credentials.
