The Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State has plunged deeper into internal turmoil following the suspension of its prominent leader, Chief Olabode George, alongside 23 other party members over alleged anti-party activities and breaches of party discipline.
The decision, announced by a disciplinary panel within the state chapter of the party, has triggered fresh political tension and widened existing cracks in the opposition party’s structure in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
According to an official statement released by the Lagos PDP Disciplinary Committee, the suspension followed a detailed investigation into complaints filed against several members accused of engaging in actions considered harmful to the unity, credibility, and electoral strength of the party.
The committee stated that the affected individuals were invited to respond to the allegations but were found to have violated key provisions of the party constitution after a review of their conduct and political engagements.
Among those suspended is Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party and one of its most influential political figures in Lagos State. His inclusion in the disciplinary action marks one of the most significant internal sanctions in recent years within the party’s state chapter.
The committee explained that the decision was reached during a meeting held on May 26, 2026, where members examined multiple petitions accusing the suspended individuals of anti-party activities, internal sabotage, and participation in actions allegedly designed to weaken the party’s cohesion ahead of future political contests.
It added that the suspension became necessary to restore discipline, strengthen internal unity, and reposition the party for effective political engagement in Lagos State.
The statement further noted that the disciplinary action was consistent with the provisions of the PDP constitution, which empowers the party to sanction members whose actions are deemed detrimental to its collective interest and public image.
In addition to Chief Bode George, the suspension list reportedly includes 23 other party members drawn from different wards and local government structures across Lagos State. These individuals are said to have played various roles within the party, ranging from grassroots mobilization to leadership positions at the state level.
The committee emphasized that all suspended members are barred from participating in any party activities, meetings, or decision-making processes pending further review of their cases. It also warned that any attempt to represent or act on behalf of the party during the suspension period would attract additional disciplinary measures.
Political observers say the development reflects the deepening leadership crisis within the Lagos PDP, a party that has struggled for years to maintain unity in the face of factional disagreements and competing power blocs.
Over time, the Lagos PDP has been characterized by internal rivalries between different political camps, often aligned with national figures and influential stakeholders. These divisions have repeatedly weakened the party’s ability to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state.
Chief Olabode George, a veteran politician and respected member of the PDP Board of Trustees, has remained a central figure in the party’s Lagos structure for decades. While he is widely regarded by supporters as a stabilizing force and ideological voice within the party, critics have often accused him of contributing to factional disputes and internal disagreements.
The latest suspension is expected to intensify political debates within the party, with supporters of the affected members likely to challenge the legitimacy and motives behind the disciplinary action. Some party insiders believe the move could deepen divisions further, while others argue it is a necessary step to enforce order and restore discipline.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Chief Olabode George nor most of the suspended members had issued an official response to the decision. Efforts to obtain comments from his associates were unsuccessful.
At the national level, the Peoples Democratic Party has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the development in Lagos State, leaving room for speculation about possible intervention or reconciliation efforts by the party’s national leadership.
Political analysts suggest that the crisis could have broader implications for the PDP’s organizational strength in Lagos, especially as political activities begin to intensify ahead of upcoming elections in Nigeria. The party’s internal instability, they argue, may further weaken its competitiveness in a state that has long remained a stronghold of the ruling party.
The PDP in Lagos has historically faced challenges related to leadership disputes, ideological differences, and factional realignments. Despite multiple reconciliation efforts in the past, unity within the party has remained fragile, often resurfacing during critical political periods.
The latest suspension adds another layer to the party’s ongoing struggles and highlights the urgent need for internal restructuring and dialogue among key stakeholders.
For now, the situation remains fluid as party members and political observers await further clarification from both the state and national leadership of the PDP on the future direction of the party in Lagos State.
