Lagos Police arraign driver in connection with death of Bumpa co-founder, Adetunji Opayele

The Lagos State Police Command has formally charged Abiola Odutayo over the death of Adetunji Opayele, co-founder of Bumpa.

Known as Teejay, Opayele tragically died on March 4, 2025, sparking public demands for justice.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson, confirmed Odutayo faced charges for reckless driving leading to Opayele’s death.

After being discharged from the hospital, Odutayo appeared in Court 1 in Tinubu on March 12, 2025.

The court granted her bail and adjourned proceedings until April 16, 2025.

Hundeyin expressed condolences to Opayele’s family and assured the public of a thorough investigation.

He stated Odutayo drove carelessly, causing the death of the 32-year-old entrepreneur.

The accident happened on Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, where witnesses claimed Odutayo refused to assist Opayele, fearing her car would get stained.

Bystanders struggled to find a hospital willing to treat him, worsening the tragedy.

This incident has fueled nationwide anger, with over 35,000 people signing a petition for justice.

Many petitioners demand manslaughter charges instead of reckless driving, urging the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to ensure a proper trial.

Opayele’s death has also raised concerns about Lagos’ road safety and emergency response systems.

Advocacy groups blame weak traffic law enforcement and delayed medical care for such preventable deaths.

The police have promised transparency, with Hundeyin vowing to ensure justice prevails.

Meanwhile, Nigerians mourn Opayele, remembering his impact on the tech industry.

The Bumpa CEO’s death underscores the urgent need for accountability and better road safety measures to protect lives across Nigeria.

The case continues to draw attention as the public awaits the court’s final decision.
