Liverpool delivered a statement performance at Anfield on Sunday, defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 to end the visitors’ eight-game unbeaten run and secure their first home Premier League victory of the season.

After weeks of frustration in front of their supporters, the Reds finally produced the kind of attacking performance their fans had been waiting for, scoring twice in a devastating four-minute spell during the first half.

Alexander Isak found the net after Pascal Gross had inadvertently turned Florian Wirtz’s effort into his own goal, giving Liverpool the perfect platform to secure three valuable points.

The result also offered encouragement to Liverpool’s attacking players, with Wirtz, Bradley Barcola and Isak combining effectively to trouble a Brighton side that had established itself among the Premier League’s most dangerous teams.

Brighton, however, had opportunities to change the outcome, particularly during the opening stages, when Liverpool’s defence was fortunate to escape punishment for a glaring missed chance.

The visitors started brightly and created the first major opportunity of the match. Diego Gomez played the ball into the penalty area for Gross, who cut it back into a dangerous position for Yasin Ayari. With the goal seemingly at his mercy, Ayari blazed his effort over the crossbar, wasting an opportunity that could have given Brighton an early advantage.

It was a costly miss, and Liverpool soon demonstrated the ruthlessness Brighton had lacked.

In the 17th minute, Liverpool took the lead through an unfortunate own goal by Gross. Florian Wirtz received the ball during an attacking move and unleashed a low effort towards goal. The shot took a deflection off Gross, wrong-footing goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen before finding the back of the net.

Although Wirtz initially celebrated as though he had scored his first Premier League goal, the strike was officially credited as an own goal after Gross’s deflection changed the ball’s trajectory.

The opening goal rewarded Liverpool’s attacking pressure and gave the home supporters a reason to believe their side could finally deliver a convincing performance at Anfield.

Brighton had barely recovered from the setback when Liverpool struck again.

In the 21st minute, Alexander Isak doubled the advantage following a swift attacking move involving Bradley Barcola. The French winger advanced down the right and delivered a cross into the penalty area. Isak met the delivery with a first-time finish, sending the ball beyond Verbruggen to make it 2-0.

The goal underlined the growing understanding between Liverpool’s attacking players. Barcola’s delivery created the opening, while Isak demonstrated the composure and finishing ability required to punish Brighton’s defence.

Within four minutes, Liverpool had turned a competitive contest into a commanding position, leaving Brighton with a difficult task ahead.

The visitors nevertheless continued searching for a response. Ayari, who had already missed a major opportunity, threatened again as Brighton attempted to exploit spaces in Liverpool’s defensive line.

One of the most significant moments came when Ayari’s effort struck the post, denying Brighton a potential route back into the match. Liverpool also benefited from important defensive interventions, with Ronald Araujo and Jeremy Jacquet producing crucial blocks to prevent further danger.

Those moments proved important because Brighton remained capable of creating opportunities despite trailing by two goals.

Liverpool’s defence, however, held firm, with goalkeeper Alisson Becker and the defenders working to protect their advantage.

The second half presented a different challenge for Liverpool. Having established a comfortable lead, the Reds struggled to maintain the attacking intensity that had characterised their opening 45 minutes.

Cody Gakpo had opportunities to extend the advantage but failed to make the most of promising situations, allowing Brighton to remain hopeful of a late comeback.

Liverpool also suffered a potential setback when Wirtz was withdrawn in the 65th minute, with Trey Nyoni coming on as a replacement. The substitution interrupted some of the attacking rhythm the German international had helped establish during the first half.

Further changes followed as Liverpool introduced Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas for Barcola and Isak in the 77th minute, seeking fresh energy while protecting their lead.

Brighton continued pressing, but Liverpool managed the closing stages effectively. Ronald Araujo was particularly impressive, combining determined defending with important interventions that frustrated the visitors’ attempts to create clear scoring opportunities.

The final whistle confirmed a valuable victory for Liverpool, who ended Brighton’s unbeaten run and moved into fourth place in the Premier League standings with 15 points, one behind their opponents.

For Liverpool, the result represents more than three points. Their first home league victory of the season offers renewed confidence in an attacking partnership that supporters have been eager to see flourish.

Isak’s clinical finish, Barcola’s contribution and Wirtz’s involvement in the opening goal demonstrated the potential of Liverpool’s attacking options when they combine effectively.

Brighton, meanwhile, will regret their missed opportunities, particularly Ayari’s early effort that sailed over the crossbar. Had that chance been converted, the contest might have developed very differently.

Instead, Liverpool punished their visitors’ mistakes, scored twice in a decisive first-half spell and defended their advantage to secure a 2-0 victory.

At Anfield, the Reds finally had something to celebrate, while Brighton’s impressive unbeaten run came to an end.
