Olympique Lyonnais held off a determined Crystal Palace comeback to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with the French side capitalising on crucial opportunities before surviving a tense closing period at Groupama Stadium.

Corentin Tolisso opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Ernest Nuamah doubled Lyon’s advantage in first-half stoppage time. Crystal Palace responded immediately after the break through Yéremy Pino, but substitute Pavel Šulc restored Lyon’s two-goal cushion in the 76th minute.

Daichi Kamada pulled another goal back for Palace in the 81st minute, setting up a nervous finish. However, Lyon held firm to claim all three points and deny Palace manager Pierre Sage a positive result on his return to the club he previously coached.

The result was particularly frustrating for Palace because their second-half performance offered genuine hope of rescuing a point after a difficult opening 45 minutes.

Lyon started aggressively and quickly put the visitors under pressure. Palace goalkeeper Walter Benítez was called upon to deal with the hosts’ attacking threat as the French side looked to exploit spaces around the penalty area.

The early pressure produced the breakthrough in the eighth minute. Following a Lyon corner, captain Tolisso found himself in a dangerous position inside the six-yard box and finished with his right foot into the bottom-right corner.

The goal gave Lyon an early advantage and exposed Palace’s vulnerability when defending set pieces. The visitors struggled to settle into the contest as Lyon continued to threaten, while Palace attempted to respond through their own attacking movements.

Tyrick Mitchell tried his luck from outside the penalty area, but his effort failed to trouble the target. Palace also had an early opportunity through Jørgen Strand Larsen, whose close-range attempt was blocked as Lyon’s defence recovered to prevent an immediate equaliser.

Despite those moments, Lyon remained the more dangerous side and continued to create opportunities through their movement and attacking combinations.

Palace appeared to have a chance of reaching half-time only one goal behind, but Lyon delivered another damaging blow in the second minute of stoppage time.

Keito Nakamura provided the decisive pass for Nuamah, who finished with his left foot from the centre of the penalty area into the bottom-left corner. The goal made it 2-0 and gave Lyon a significant advantage heading into the interval.

Nakamura’s contribution proved important, with his attacking quality helping Lyon turn their first-half superiority into a more comfortable lead.

The half-time score reflected the hosts’ greater effectiveness in front of goal. Lyon had established control through their set-piece threat and attacking movement, while Palace faced the difficult task of scoring at least twice to get back into the contest.

However, the visitors returned from the break with renewed determination and needed only five minutes to change the atmosphere inside the stadium.

In the 50th minute, Palace won a corner and executed a short-corner routine that caught Lyon’s defence off guard.

Adam Wharton received the ball as Lyon anticipated a more conventional delivery. Instead of crossing into the penalty area, the Palace midfielder played a clever through pass into the box for Pino.

The Spanish winger took advantage of the opening and fired into the roof of the net, reducing the deficit to 2-1 and giving Palace a realistic opportunity to complete the comeback.

The goal demonstrated the importance of Palace’s tactical adjustment after half-time. Rather than relying solely on crosses, the visitors used a rehearsed set-piece routine to create space and exploit Lyon’s defensive positioning.

With the score at 2-1, the contest became considerably more competitive as Palace pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Lyon were forced to defend more frequently, while Palace looked increasingly dangerous in transition. The visitors’ improved attacking play put pressure on the hosts and raised the possibility of a dramatic turnaround.

Palace also came close to receiving a penalty during the second half after Kamada broke forward and got ahead of Nuamah inside Lyon’s penalty area.

Kamada went to ground following contact with the Lyon goalscorer, prompting an appeal from the visitors. However, referee João Pinheiro waved play on, and the video assistant referee completed its check without recommending a penalty.

Instead, play continued, leaving Palace to search for an equaliser through open play.

Lyon responded by looking for opportunities to extend their advantage, and their attacking depth eventually produced another decisive moment.

In the 76th minute, substitute Pavel Šulc scored Lyon’s third goal after a delivery from Abner Vinícius.

Abner advanced down the right and delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Šulc connected with a flicked finish that beat Benítez.

The goal initially raised questions about a possible offside position, but replays showed that Šulc had been kept onside by the positioning of Palace defender Axel Disasi.

Lyon therefore restored their two-goal advantage at 3-1, seemingly putting themselves in a strong position to secure the victory.

Šulc’s contribution underlined the value of Lyon’s substitutions, with the forward making an immediate impact after coming off the bench.

However, Palace refused to surrender and continued searching for another goal.

Their persistence paid off in the 81st minute when Kamada reduced the deficit to 3-2.

The move developed down the right flank, where substitute Adam Khalaili advanced and helped create danger around Lyon’s penalty area. Amid a crowded and chaotic sequence inside the box, the ball fell into a dangerous area for Kamada.

Kamada’s finish revived Palace’s hopes of salvaging a result and ensured that the closing stages would be tense for the home supporters.

The goal also highlighted Palace’s improved attacking threat after the interval. Having struggled to make a decisive impact in the first half, the visitors found greater urgency and began asking more difficult questions of Lyon’s defence.

With the score at 3-2, Palace pushed forward in search of a late equaliser, while Lyon concentrated on protecting their narrow advantage.

The hosts had to withstand the pressure and avoid the defensive mistakes that had allowed Palace back into the contest. Every attacking movement from the visitors carried the possibility of another decisive moment, but Lyon ultimately preserved their lead until the final whistle.

The victory represented an important result for Lyon in the Europa League, particularly after they had allowed Palace to reduce a comfortable two-goal lead to a single goal twice during the match.

For Palace, the defeat will be disappointing given the character they showed in the second half. Pino’s goal and Kamada’s late strike demonstrated their ability to threaten Lyon, but the defensive lapses that allowed Tolisso, Nuamah and Šulc to score ultimately proved costly.

The visitors may also reflect on the penalty appeal involving Kamada and Nuamah, although the referee’s decision to continue play stood following the VAR check.

Ultimately, Lyon’s ability to make their opportunities count proved decisive. Tolisso’s early finish established the advantage, Nuamah’s stoppage-time strike strengthened it, and Šulc’s contribution restored the crucial two-goal cushion when Palace threatened to complete their comeback.

Pino and Kamada ensured that the contest remained alive until the closing stages, but their efforts were not enough to prevent Lyon from securing a 3-2 victory.

The result offered Lyon three valuable points in the UEFA Europa League, while Palace were left to consider how their improved second-half performance could not compensate for their defensive shortcomings before the interval.
