Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has made it clear that football remains his priority as he prepares for another season with Italian Serie A club Udinese.
The 26 year old goalkeeper has enjoyed an eventful summer away from the pitch, making high profile appearances at events including the British Grand Prix and Paris Fashion Week. However, as the new football campaign approaches, Okoye says he knows exactly where his attention must be.
For the Nigerian international, the distinction between his public life and his professional responsibilities is straightforward. He believes activities outside football can exist alongside his career, provided they do not interfere with his performance as a goalkeeper.
“What happens off the pitch is one thing, what happens on the pitch is another,” Okoye said, stressing that he has learned to keep the two sides of his life separate.
The goalkeeper added that personal branding and marketing have become increasingly important for modern footballers, but his fundamental responsibility has not changed.
“At the end of the day, I am a goalkeeper, and my main job is to protect my team’s goal,” he said.
That mindset comes at an important stage of Okoye’s career. The Nigerian has rebuilt his reputation in Italy after a difficult period in England with Watford, where he struggled to establish himself consistently before returning to Italy.
His performances for Udinese have helped restore confidence in his ability and have also kept him in the conversation around Nigeria’s national team.
Okoye was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, to Nigerian parents and developed through German football before eventually making his way into the professional game. He spent time in the youth system at Fortuna Düsseldorf before moving to Mainz, where he continued his development.
His senior breakthrough came in the Netherlands with Sparta Rotterdam, where he established himself as a first choice goalkeeper and attracted attention from clubs elsewhere in Europe.
That form eventually earned him a move to Watford in England in 2022. However, his time at the Championship club did not develop as expected, and he subsequently returned to Italy with Udinese.
The move proved important for his career.
At Udinese, Okoye has gradually developed into a reliable goalkeeper in one of Europe’s most tactically demanding leagues. His performances have included several impressive displays against some of Serie A’s biggest clubs.
Last season, he recorded 10 clean sheets in Serie A, providing an important foundation for Udinese during the campaign.
His form also earned him recognition beyond his club. The goalkeeper was named in Serie A’s Team of the Week after producing an outstanding performance in Udinese’s 3–0 victory over AC Milan, a result that highlighted his ability to perform under pressure.
Okoye’s international career has experienced its own ups and downs.
The goalkeeper has represented Nigeria at senior level and was part of the Super Eagles squad during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. His international career came under intense scrutiny after Nigeria’s elimination by Tunisia at the 2021 AFCON, but he has continued working to regain his place and confidence with the national team.
His return to Nigeria’s squad in 2026 was therefore an important moment. He featured in the Super Eagles’ 2–1 friendly victory over Iran during the March international window before a thigh injury ruled him out of the subsequent match against Jordan.
His club performances, however, continued to attract attention.
Now, with a new season approaching, Okoye is determined to build on the progress he made last campaign.
The goalkeeper also appears to have found an environment that suits his personality. He has spoken positively about life in Udine, describing the city as quiet and peaceful and suggesting that its calm atmosphere allows him to concentrate fully on his work.
That stability could prove valuable as he enters another demanding Serie A campaign.
Okoye has also been linked with a possible move away from Udinese during the current transfer window, but his existing contract runs until 2028 and he remains committed to the Italian club.
Udinese will begin their competitive campaign against Padova in the Coppa Italia before opening their Serie A season at home against Como on August 22.
For Okoye, those fixtures offer the first opportunity to turn his renewed focus into performances.
The Nigerian goalkeeper has already experienced the highs and lows that come with professional football. He has played in different countries, faced criticism, earned international recognition and rebuilt his career after difficult periods.
His message ahead of the new season is therefore simple. The attention outside football may continue, but once he steps between the posts, his responsibility remains the same.
Protecting Udinese’s goal comes first.
And with a fresh campaign about to begin, Okoye will be hoping that another strong season in Italy can strengthen both his position at club level and his prospects with the Super Eagles.
