A 30-year-old man, Abubakar Auwal, has died after he was allegedly beaten by a group of people over claims that he was involved in an affair with a married woman in Kano State.
The incident occurred on July 24 in the Sheka area of Kano, prompting the arrest of three suspects by the Kano State Police Command.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the victim was allegedly lured by 40-year-old Abubakar Ali and 27-year-old Sulaiman Lawan following allegations that he had been having a relationship with Ali’s wife.
Police said they received a distress report around noon on the day of the incident and immediately deployed officers from the Sheka Police Division to the scene.
When officers arrived, Auwal was found unconscious after allegedly being severely assaulted. He was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, where doctors later confirmed his death.
The police arrested three suspects at the scene: Abubakar Ali, Sulaiman Lawan and 22-year-old Hafsat Umar, the married woman at the centre of the allegations. All three are residents of the area.
Auwal’s body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for an autopsy, while detectives continue their investigation. Police said the suspects would be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, condemned the killing and warned residents against resorting to mob justice.
He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force is constitutionally empowered to investigate crimes, arrest suspects and prosecute offenders through due process, urging members of the public to allow the law to take its course.
Bakori also assured residents that the command would conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
