Manchester City continued their perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with Erling Haaland once again proving to be the difference-maker.
The Norwegian striker scored the only goal of the match in the 26th minute, heading home a superb cross from Antoine Semenyo to give City the lead. The finish was classic Haaland: powerful, direct and ruthless. The striker’s ability to attack crosses and dominate defenders in the air once again proved decisive. The goal also continued his remarkable scoring run at the beginning of the campaign, with the Norwegian finding the net in each of City’s first three league matches.

One of the major talking points before kick-off was the surprise inclusion of Enzo Fernández in City’s starting lineup. The midfielder had initially been expected to begin on the bench, but an injury to Nico O’Reilly during the warm-up forced Maresca to change his plans. Fernández therefore made an earlier-than-expected City debut and played until the 76th minute.
His presence added another intriguing subplot to a match already dominated by Haaland’s milestone.
As the game entered its final stages, Coventry pushed forward with greater urgency. City were forced to defend their narrow advantage rather than comfortably controlling the contest. Gianluigi Donnarumma became increasingly important, making crucial saves to prevent Coventry from finding an equaliser. City’s defence also had to withstand a late Coventry surge. The visitors created enough pressure to make the closing minutes nervy for the home supporters, but the champions held firm.

The victory gives City nine points from their opening three Premier League matches, maintaining their perfect record and keeping them at the top end of the early-season table. For Coventry, however, the defeat means they remain without a point or a goal after three matches, despite showing plenty of fight against one of the league’s strongest teams.
For Haaland, meanwhile, it was another day, another decisive goal and another piece of history. His 26th-minute header not only secured three points for City but also brought up his 300th club career goal, underlining why he remains one of the most feared strikers in world football.
Manchester City may not have produced their most convincing performance, but the result will matter most to Maresca. Three matches, three victories and a striker who continues to deliver when it matters.
