A 10-year-old girl has reportedly been rescued after a man intervened to stop her aunt from allegedly subjecting her to repeated physical abuse in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday morning, October 29, 2026, after the man, whose identity has not yet been established, decided to intervene following repeated cries for help from the young girl.

According to the account shared online, the man disclosed that he had been hearing the child’s cries for an extended period and became concerned about what was happening to her. He subsequently decided to step in, leading to the girl’s rescue from the alleged abuse.

The 10-year-old was reportedly living with her aunt before the intervention.

Although further details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged mistreatment remain unclear, the incident has drawn attention to the vulnerability of children living under the care of relatives and guardians.

The development has also prompted calls for parents, neighbours and community members to take reports of suspected child abuse seriously rather than dismissing repeated cries for help as ordinary domestic disagreements.

As of the time of filing this report, details about the aunt’s identity, the extent of the girl’s injuries and whether the matter has been formally reported to the police or relevant child-protection authorities remain unconfirmed.

There has also been no independently verified information establishing whether the aunt has been arrested or whether the rescued girl has received medical attention and been placed in a safe environment.

The incident comes amid other reported cases of child abuse in Anambra State. In September 2026, the state police command announced the arrest of a 32-year-old woman in Obosi over the alleged brutalisation of her seven-year-old daughter, who reportedly sustained injuries from a hot kitchen knife. Police said the child was rescued following the intervention of community security personnel and concerned residents.

In another case announced in June, the Anambra State Police Command provided financial assistance for the medical treatment of a 10-year-old boy allegedly abused by his guardian in Isiowulu.

The latest incident in Ogidi has once again highlighted the importance of community vigilance and prompt intervention when children are suspected of suffering abuse.

Child-protection advocates have consistently emphasised that children should be protected from physical violence, intimidation and neglect, regardless of whether the alleged perpetrators are parents, relatives or other caregivers.

The welfare of the rescued girl, including access to appropriate medical care, emotional support and a safe living arrangement, remains a major concern as more details are awaited.

DDM News will continue to monitor the development for updates from the Anambra State Police Command and relevant child-protection authorities.
