Manchester United’s struggles continued on Sunday as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Leeds United at Elland Road, extending their winless run to six matches and increasing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

Bryan Mbeumo put the visitors ahead in the first half, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin responded shortly after the interval to earn Leeds a valuable point in front of their home supporters.

For Manchester United, the result represented another missed opportunity to revive their Premier League campaign. Having managed just one victory in their opening seven league matches, the Red Devils once again struggled to turn a promising start into the three points they desperately needed.

Leeds, meanwhile, demonstrated resilience after falling behind, growing into the contest in the second half and punishing United’s defensive vulnerability to secure a share of the spoils.

The atmosphere at Elland Road reflected the importance of the rivalry, with both teams entering the encounter determined to establish control. Manchester United initially looked the more composed side, moving the ball with greater purpose and attempting to exploit spaces behind Leeds’ defensive line.

Their patience eventually paid off in the 35th minute when Mbeumo broke the deadlock with a well-worked attacking move.

Youri Tielemans provided the decisive assist, delivering a cross that allowed Mbeumo to finish and give Manchester United a 1-0 advantage. The goal rewarded United’s first-half efforts and appeared to put Carrick’s side in a strong position to secure a much-needed victory.

Mbeumo’s contribution was particularly important for a United side that has struggled to produce consistent attacking performances. His movement and finishing offered a reminder of the quality available to the visitors when their attacking combinations function effectively.

United went into the break with the lead, but their advantage did not last long after the restart.

Leeds returned with greater intensity and began putting the visitors under pressure, looking to exploit any uncertainty in United’s defensive organisation. The home side’s improved approach soon produced the equaliser.

In the 51st minute, Calvert-Lewin brought Leeds level after a corner created problems inside the Manchester United penalty area. Tarik Muharemović supplied the assist, and Calvert-Lewin capitalised on the opportunity to make it 1-1.

The goal exposed United’s difficulties in defending set-pieces and gave Leeds renewed belief that they could complete a comeback.

For Calvert-Lewin, the equaliser was another important contribution in a season in which he has emerged as a significant attacking threat for Leeds. His ability to compete physically in the penalty area and react quickly to opportunities made him a difficult opponent for United’s defenders.

The equaliser also changed the mood of the contest. Leeds grew in confidence, while United were forced to reconsider their approach as the possibility of another disappointing result became increasingly real.

Carrick’s team struggled to regain the control they had enjoyed before the interval. Their attacking play lacked the consistency required to break down Leeds again, while the hosts continued to threaten through their physical approach and determination to win second balls.

United’s afternoon was further complicated by an injury concern involving Lisandro Martínez. The defender was substituted at half-time, forcing a defensive adjustment at a crucial point in the match.

The change disrupted United’s defensive arrangements just as Leeds were preparing to increase their attacking pressure. Although injuries are an unavoidable part of football, the timing presented another challenge for a side already searching for stability.

Captain Bruno Fernandes also endured a frustrating afternoon. Operating in an advanced role, the Portuguese midfielder struggled to impose himself consistently on the contest and received a booking for dissent, adding to the visitors’ difficulties.

His inability to influence proceedings as effectively as United would have wanted reflected a broader problem for Carrick’s team: promising individual players have not consistently translated their ability into convincing collective performances.

Leeds continued to search for a winning goal as the match progressed, showing greater confidence after their equaliser. United, however, remained determined to avoid defeat, and neither side managed to find the decisive breakthrough.

The closing stages offered Manchester United an opportunity to demonstrate the composure and resilience required to protect a result away from home. Instead, the visitors left Elland Road with another draw, extending a difficult sequence that has raised questions about their consistency, tactical direction and ability to manage matches.

For Leeds manager Daniel Farke, the result offered encouragement. His team responded positively after conceding, improved their intensity after the interval and took advantage of an opportunity from a set-piece situation.

The performance also underlined the importance of Calvert-Lewin to Leeds’ attacking ambitions. His equaliser ensured the home side recovered from a difficult first half and prevented Manchester United from taking all three points.

For Carrick, however, the pressure is unlikely to ease. One victory in seven Premier League matches is a disappointing return for a club with Manchester United’s ambitions, and the inability to protect a first-half lead will be another source of frustration.

The Red Devils have now gone six matches without a win, a sequence that highlights their difficulties in maintaining momentum and converting competitive performances into victories.

Although the point prevents another defeat, it does little to resolve the questions surrounding United’s form. The challenge now is to improve their defensive organisation, establish greater control in midfield and develop a more consistent attacking rhythm.

Leeds will take confidence from their second-half response, while Manchester United must reflect on another opportunity lost.

At Elland Road, Mbeumo’s first-half strike was not enough to deliver the victory United desperately needed. Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser ensured the points were shared, leaving both teams with reasons to reflect on a contest that changed significantly after the break.

Full-time: Leeds United 1-1 Manchester United.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for Manchester United in the 35th minute, assisted by Youri Tielemans, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised for Leeds in the 51st minute following an assist from Tarik Muharemović.

The result extended Manchester United’s winless run to six matches, leaving them with just one victory after seven Premier League fixtures.
