Mbaise Groom Abandons Traditional Wedding

A traditional wedding ceremony in Mbaise, Imo State, reportedly ended in disappointment after a groom walked away from the venue following a disagreement over a ₦1.2 million marriage demand allegedly presented by the bride’s family.

The incident attracted widespread attention on Sunday, November 1, 2026, after videos showing the disagreement between members of both families circulated on social media.

According to reports, the bride had lost both parents, leaving her uncle to take responsibility for her marriage arrangements and represent her family during the traditional negotiations.

However, the negotiations reportedly took an unexpected turn when the bride’s family presented a demand said to amount to ₦1.2 million.

The amount allegedly angered the groom, who reportedly refused to proceed with the ceremony and left the venue alongside some members of his family, leaving the bride and other guests behind.

Footage circulating online showed the tense atmosphere at the wedding venue, with members of both families appearing to exchange words during the disagreement.

The wedding preparations had reportedly been completed before the incident, with decorations, refreshments and a cake bearing the couple’s initials already arranged for the celebration.

The groom’s reported decision to walk away has since generated heated reactions, particularly because the bride was said to have lost both parents and was relying on her uncle to represent her family.

Some Nigerians criticised the alleged demand, arguing that marriage negotiations should not become a financial burden for prospective husbands. Others questioned why the disagreement was allowed to escalate on the wedding day rather than being resolved during earlier family discussions.

Several commentators also expressed sympathy for the bride, questioning the emotional impact of being left at the venue after preparations had been made for what was expected to be an important day in her life.

However, others defended the groom’s decision to withdraw if he believed the financial requirements were beyond his means, arguing that marriage should involve mutual understanding rather than pressure.

The incident has also revived conversations about traditional marriage requirements in Mbaise, an area frequently associated with elaborate Igbo marriage lists.

Although Mbaise marriage customs can involve several traditional items, including yams, livestock, drinks and other family gifts, the requirements are not necessarily identical across communities or families.

A 2025 academic study published in the Odezuruigbo: An International Journal of Igbo, African and Communication Studies identified ₦60 as the customary bride price in Mbaise, while other marriage requirements and family presentations are treated separately.

In a previous explanation of the controversy surrounding Mbaise marriage demands, Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo also argued that requirements differ from one family to another and that negotiations can substantially reduce initial demands.

Consequently, the reported ₦1.2 million in the latest incident should not automatically be interpreted as the official bride price in Mbaise. More information is needed to establish whether the amount represented the bride price alone or the combined cost of other traditional requirements.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the groom, the bride nor their family representatives had publicly provided a detailed explanation of what transpired or confirmed whether the marriage negotiations had completely collapsed.

The identities of the couple also remain undisclosed.

The incident has once again raised questions about the balance between preserving cultural traditions and avoiding financial expectations that could frustrate couples seeking to marry.

While traditional marriage rites remain an important part of Igbo cultural identity, the controversy has renewed calls for families to prioritise mutual understanding, reasonable negotiations and the wishes of the couple.

For the bride, however, the immediate concern remains the unexpected turn of events at a ceremony that was supposed to mark the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
