Kylian Mbappe could consider leaving Real Madrid in the summer of 2027 if the Spanish giants fail to meet his expectations, according to French journalist Daniel Riolo, amid growing questions about the forward’s situation at the club.

The possibility of a departure has emerged during a difficult period for the France international, whose recent injury, recovery activities and reported tensions have attracted considerable attention in Spain and France.

Riolo, speaking about Mbappe’s situation on RMC Sport’s After Foot and subsequently on Spanish radio programme El Larguero, suggested that the forward might not remain at the Santiago Bernabeu indefinitely if the club fails to build a team capable of meeting his ambitions.

“If he does not have the team he wants, it’s possible that he will leave. I think it’s possible. I don’t think he’s happy with everything that’s happening at Real Madrid this season,” Riolo said.

The comments have fuelled speculation about the long-term future of one of football’s biggest stars. However, they represent the journalist’s assessment of the situation rather than confirmation that Mbappe has decided to leave Madrid.

The 27-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2024 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract, fulfilling a long-standing ambition to play for the Spanish club.

His arrival was expected to strengthen Madrid’s attacking options and help the club maintain its dominance in domestic and European football. However, the Frenchman’s time in the Spanish capital has also brought intense scrutiny, with expectations surrounding his performances and the club’s results remaining exceptionally high.

Recent developments have added another dimension to the discussion. Mbappe suffered a left-knee injury while on international duty with France, prompting his return to Madrid for further assessment and rehabilitation.

Real Madrid confirmed on September 26 that medical examinations had identified hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee. The club said his recovery would depend on how the injury developed.

His activities away from the pitch subsequently attracted criticism in sections of the Spanish and French media. Reports suggested that some people within Madrid were unhappy with aspects of his conduct during rehabilitation, although such accounts should be treated as reported concerns rather than established facts about the club’s internal position.

The controversy has placed additional attention on Mbappe at a time when Madrid are seeking consistency and success under manager Jose Mourinho.

Riolo’s comments suggest that the relationship between the forward’s ambitions and the club’s sporting direction could become increasingly important in determining his long-term future.

For a player who arrived in Madrid hoping to compete for football’s biggest honours, the strength and direction of the squad are likely to remain central considerations. Real Madrid’s reputation, resources and history of European success were major attractions when Mbappe chose to join the club.

However, expectations at the Bernabeu are demanding. Individual brilliance alone is rarely enough to satisfy supporters who expect regular domestic titles and Champions League triumphs.

Mbappe has already established himself as one of the leading figures in world football, but the wider success of the team will inevitably influence how his Madrid spell is judged.

The forward’s future could also become a major talking point in the transfer market if doubts about his long-term satisfaction continue. A player of his standing would attract interest from leading European clubs, although there is currently no confirmed indication that Real Madrid are preparing to sell him or that he has formally requested a transfer.

Any potential departure would depend on several factors, including the club’s sporting plans, Mbappe’s own intentions, contractual considerations and the availability of a suitable destination.

For now, the immediate priority is his recovery from injury and his return to competitive football. His fitness will be particularly important as Madrid approach a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures.

The club will also want to avoid allowing speculation about the forward’s future to overshadow its broader objectives for the season.

Despite the reports, Mbappe’s potential departure remains a possibility raised by Riolo, not an agreed plan or an official transfer decision.

Nevertheless, the comments have introduced a significant question for Real Madrid: whether the club can continue to meet the ambitions of its biggest stars while building a team capable of competing consistently for the most prestigious trophies.

If Madrid deliver the results and squad development Mbappe expects, the speculation may fade. If dissatisfaction persists, his future could become one of the major stories of the 2027 transfer window.
