Nigerian businessman and social commentator Isaac Fayose has criticised Nigerians who support and campaign for the All Progressives Congress (APC), questioning why some citizens continue to back politicians despite the economic and infrastructural challenges facing the country.
Fayose made the remarks while commenting on what he described as the difficult conditions confronting ordinary Nigerians.
“Mental headquarters is in Nigeria right now because, tell me, with the current situation in Nigeria, the poor ones are campaigning for their oppressors,” he said.
He questioned the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system, arguing that ordinary citizens could face serious consequences when they fall ill because of inadequate medical facilities.
“If some of them fall sick, they might end up in heaven because of the poor state of our hospitals, while politicians are enjoying abroad,” Fayose added.
The businessman also criticised the condition of roads across different parts of the country, citing several major routes as examples of what he described as poor infrastructure.
“From Abuja to Lokoja, no road; from Benin to Ekiti, no road. Yet, they are using the Coastal Road to campaign,” he said.
His comments have generated reactions, particularly around the political loyalty of voters who continue to support parties despite experiencing economic hardship and concerns about public infrastructure.
Fayose’s remarks also reflect the broader political debate ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections, with citizens and political actors increasingly scrutinising the performance of governments at federal and state levels.
However, his descriptions of specific roads and hospitals represent his assessment of the situation and are not, on their own, an independent assessment of the condition of every route or healthcare facility mentioned.
The comments have nonetheless renewed debate over whether political support should be based on party loyalty, personal interests or the measurable performance of elected leaders.
