Nigeria’s quest to produce the next generation of basketball superstars received another major boost as dozens of gifted young athletes displayed exceptional talent during the Top 50 Elite Basketball Camp organised by D’Tigers assistant captain Michael Eric in Lagos.
The one day programme, held under the banner of the Erico Sports Legacy Foundation, brought together 50 of the country’s brightest young basketball prospects for intensive training, mentorship and talent evaluation. The camp created an environment where aspiring players could sharpen their skills while learning valuable lessons from professionals who have competed at the highest levels of the game.
For many participants, the event represented more than just another basketball clinic. It offered a glimpse into what is possible through discipline, dedication and consistent hard work, while opening doors to opportunities that could transform their sporting careers.
Michael Eric, whose remarkable journey took him from the streets of Mushin in Lagos to the National Basketball Association and Nigeria’s national team, said he was deeply impressed by the standard displayed throughout the programme.
The experienced centre noted that Nigeria continues to produce naturally gifted athletes, adding that the real challenge is creating the right structures that allow those talents to flourish.
He explained that seeing the determination and enthusiasm shown by the young players reminded him of his own early years when he dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player despite limited opportunities.
According to Eric, every child deserves access to quality coaching and proper mentorship regardless of their background.
He stressed that investing in young people through sports remains one of the most effective ways to develop future leaders while keeping them focused on positive goals.
The former Temple University standout said giving back has become a personal responsibility after enjoying a successful career abroad.
He revealed that the Erico Sports Legacy Foundation was established to honour the memory of his late father, legendary Nigerian goalkeeper and coach Joe Erico, whose passion for youth development continues to inspire the foundation’s activities.
Eric explained that his father’s legacy was built on service, discipline and selflessness, values he hopes to pass on to every youngster who participates in the programme.
Throughout the day, participants underwent rigorous basketball drills designed to improve shooting accuracy, ball handling, defensive awareness, teamwork and decision making on the court.
The camp also featured tactical sessions where coaches explained modern basketball techniques, leadership principles and the importance of maintaining academic excellence alongside sporting ambitions.
Organisers believe that developing complete individuals is just as important as producing outstanding athletes.
Programme Director Gbenga Jetawo said the foundation has impacted more than 1,000 young Nigerians since its establishment five years ago.
He described this year’s edition as one of the most competitive, with participants demonstrating remarkable improvement during every stage of the training sessions.
Jetawo explained that the organisation remains committed to identifying hidden talents across Nigeria while providing them with opportunities that may otherwise remain beyond their reach.
He added that many talented youngsters abandon their dreams because of financial challenges, inadequate facilities and limited exposure.
The foundation hopes to bridge those gaps by providing mentorship, sporting equipment and pathways to scholarships and professional opportunities.

Organisers disclosed that two or three outstanding performers from the camp could receive sponsorship opportunities or invitations for basketball trials with clubs and academies in Europe.

Technical Director and Head Coach Chris Nomigo praised the commitment shown by the young athletes from the beginning to the end of the programme.
He noted that genuine talent was evident across several age groups and expressed confidence that many of the participants could eventually represent Nigeria at international competitions if they continue working hard.
Nomigo also emphasised that player development should not end after the camp.
He explained that organisers intend to maintain contact with participants, monitor their progress and continue providing guidance whenever necessary.
According to him, sustainable mentorship remains essential in helping young athletes navigate both sporting and personal challenges.
Nigeria has built a strong reputation as one of Africa’s leading producers of basketball talent, with several players competing successfully in the NBA, Europe, Asia and the Basketball Africa League.
However, experts believe that stronger grassroots programmes remain essential if the country hopes to consistently compete with the world’s basketball powerhouses.
Initiatives like the Erico Sports Legacy Foundation are gradually helping to close that gap by investing directly in young athletes before they reach elite competition.
For Michael Eric, the long term vision extends beyond organising annual camps.
The former NBA player hopes to establish a fully equipped basketball academy capable of combining quality education with elite sports development, ensuring that young Nigerians receive opportunities to excel both on and off the court.
