Squadron Leader Ahamefule Man Ugwueje, one of the Nigerian Air Force personnel who died in the aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, had reportedly married fellow military officer Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle just weeks before the tragedy.
Ugwueje and Adekunle reportedly got married on September 19, less than three weeks before the Nigerian Air Force ATR 42 aircraft carrying 32 people crashed in Igbokoda.
The couple, who both come from families with longstanding military traditions, had reportedly begun their lives together as husband and wife shortly before Ugwueje’s death in active service.
According to reports circulating alongside videos from their wedding and personal moments, the newlyweds were still on their honeymoon when tragedy struck.
Ugwueje was among the crew members aboard the Nigerian Air Force aircraft when it crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State, leaving those on board feared dead.
His death has since drawn emotional reactions, particularly because of how recently he had exchanged marital vows with Adekunle.
The couple’s military background has also added another layer to the story. Both reportedly come from families with deep connections to the Nigerian military, making their union one between two families familiar with the demands and sacrifices associated with military service.
For Adekunle, what should have been the beginning of a new chapter has instead been overshadowed by the loss of her husband barely weeks after their wedding.
