LAGOS, NIGERIA — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has uncovered an illegal herbal medicine production facility in Lagos State.
The factory was discovered in the Agege area of the state. Products found at the facility were carrying a falsified registration number.
The Discovery
NAFDAC announced the discovery in a statement posted on its official X account on Wednesday. It said the operation followed a report on herbal products allegedly bearing fake NAFDAC registration numbers.
The agency said its investigative team conducted surveillance before identifying the facility. They found three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters carrying registration number A7-1827L.
“Verification through NAFDAC’s NAPAMS portal revealed that the registration number belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, confirming its fraudulent use on the herbal products,” the agency stated.
Arrest Made
NAFDAC said the facility’s managing director and chief executive officer was not present when officials carried out the operation.
However, the company manager was arrested for further questioning. The agency said the manager is assisting with the investigation.
Call for Public Support
The agency called on members of the public to provide credible information about suspected illegal manufacturing activities. It provided its call centres on 0800-1-623322 and 0700-1-623322. Reports can also be sent to [email protected].
Recent Discovery
The latest discovery comes less than a week after NAFDAC uncovered a suspected counterfeit drinks factory in Lagos. The factory was located at the Trade Fair Complex.
Two people were arrested in connection with the alleged production and repackaging of fake alcoholic and energy drinks. The agency said the operation exposed unhygienic production conditions.
Suspects allegedly used counterfeit labels to rebrand empty bottles of expensive wines. They then refilled them with adulterated alcoholic beverages.
What This Means
The discoveries highlight the prevalence of fake and substandard products in Nigeria. They also underscore NAFDAC’s efforts to protect consumers.
Illegal manufacturing facilities pose serious health risks. They produce unregulated products that can harm consumers.
What Happens Next
NAFDAC will continue its investigation. It will also intensify surveillance across the country.
For now, the agency has urged consumers to verify the registration numbers of products before purchasing them. It said this would help to prevent the consumption of fake products.
