Newcastle United produced a composed and ruthless second-half performance to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, handing manager Matthias Jaissle his first Premier League victory and leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side without a point or a goal after two league matches.
After a goalless opening 45 minutes in which Tottenham enjoyed significant possession and created several promising situations, Newcastle changed the complexion of the contest after the interval. Anthony Elanga opened the scoring in the 62nd minute before Yoane Wissa doubled the advantage 10 minutes later, completing a frustrating evening for the home supporters.
Tottenham Start Bright but Newcastle Stay Organised
Tottenham entered the match looking to respond to their disappointing 3-0 defeat against Brentford on the opening weekend. De Zerbi made several changes, including handing Omar Marmoush his first Premier League start, while Newcastle were also adapting to a new era under Jaissle.
The hosts controlled much of the first half, moving the ball confidently and attempting to pin Newcastle back. Tottenham eventually finished the match with 58% possession and 17 shots, compared with Newcastle’s 42% possession and 11 attempts. However, the statistics ultimately highlighted Spurs’ biggest problem: possession did not translate into goals.
Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek was particularly important. The young goalkeeper made several interventions to keep Tottenham at bay as the home side searched for an opening.
At the other end, Newcastle remained dangerous whenever they won possession and attacked quickly. Their counter-attacking threat would eventually prove decisive.
Elanga Breaks the Deadlock in the 62nd Minute
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 62nd minute.
Newcastle debutant Nico González played a superb cross-field pass to Amar Dedić, who continued the move by heading the ball into the path of Anthony Elanga.
Elanga took full advantage of the opportunity, finishing with composure to put Newcastle 1-0 ahead.
The goal was especially significant for Elanga, who had endured a difficult period in front of goal. His finish gave Newcastle the confidence to take control of the match and put Tottenham under immediate pressure.
The assist was officially credited to Amar Dedić, while González’s excellent pass was a crucial part of the build-up.
Wissa Doubles Newcastle’s Advantage
Tottenham had barely recovered from conceding when Newcastle delivered another blow.
Just 10 minutes after Elanga’s opener, Newcastle doubled their advantage through Yoane Wissa in the 72nd minute.
A deep delivery caused problems inside the Tottenham penalty area, and substitute Nick Woltemade provided the final touch to set up Wissa.
The Newcastle forward reacted brilliantly, producing an acrobatic finish to send the ball beyond the Tottenham goalkeeper and make it 2-0.
It was Wissa’s first Premier League goal of 2026 and another reward for Newcastle’s ability to turn their promising attacking moments into decisive chances.
Spurs Push but Newcastle Hold Firm
With two goals to recover, Tottenham attempted to increase the pressure.
De Zerbi introduced Mikey Moore, Destiny Udogie and Mohammed Kudus as Spurs searched for a way back into the contest. Dominic Solanke also came on, but Newcastle’s defensive organisation remained impressive.
Tottenham continued to see plenty of the ball, but Newcastle were increasingly comfortable defending their lead and looking for opportunities on the counter.
The visitors also made changes of their own, bringing on Nick Woltemade, Sean Steur, Jacob Ramsey and Jacob Murphy as Jaissle sought to protect the advantage and maintain the intensity.
One late Tottenham opportunity almost produced a consolation goal. Omar Marmoush released Destiny Udogie down the left, with Udogie finding Solanke inside the area. His effort looked capable of finding the bottom corner, but Lewis Hall produced an important clearance to preserve Newcastle’s clean sheet.
Tottenham’s Frustrating Night
The final whistle confirmed a damaging result for Tottenham.
Spurs had controlled long stretches of the game and finished with more possession, more shots and more corners, but Newcastle were considerably more clinical when the important moments arrived.
Tottenham recorded 17 shots, with six on target, while Newcastle had 11 shots and only two on target — yet both of Newcastle’s shots on target resulted in goals.
The defeat means Tottenham have now lost their opening two Premier League matches without scoring, following their 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend. The pressure on De Zerbi will inevitably increase, particularly after Tottenham’s significant summer spending.
For Newcastle, however, the victory represents an important statement.
Jaissle’s side showed patience, defensive discipline and devastating efficiency after the break. New signing Nico González impressed on his debut, while Elanga and Wissa provided the finishing touch that Newcastle needed.
The Magpies leave North London with three points, a clean sheet and their first Premier League win of the season, while Tottenham are left searching for answers after another frustrating afternoon in front of their home supporters
