Newcastle United produced another spirited comeback at St James’ Park on Saturday, recovering from two goals down to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw against Bournemouth and extend their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
The Magpies looked destined for their first defeat under new manager Matthias Jaissle after Bournemouth established a commanding two-goal advantage. But Newcastle refused to fold, with Harvey Barnes beginning the revival before Jacob Ramsey completed the comeback with a late equaliser in the 88th minute.
Bournemouth had started the afternoon with greater purpose and quickly exposed weaknesses in Newcastle’s defence. Marcus Tavernier opened the scoring in the ninth minute, giving the visitors an early advantage and immediately putting pressure on Jaissle’s side.
The Cherries continued to cause problems, with their pressing game making it difficult for Newcastle to settle into their usual rhythm. Bournemouth’s dominance was rewarded again before half-time when Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw turned the ball into his own net in the 35th minute.
At 2-0 down, Newcastle faced a huge challenge. The home supporters expected a response, but Bournemouth had controlled much of the opening period and looked capable of protecting their advantage.
Newcastle, however, returned from the interval with renewed urgency.
Jaissle turned to his bench as he looked for a way back into the contest, and his substitutions eventually proved decisive. Harvey Barnes helped transform the momentum when he pulled one goal back, giving Newcastle hope and injecting fresh energy into the stadium.
The goal changed the mood completely.
Suddenly, Bournemouth were no longer comfortably controlling the game. Newcastle began pushing higher, attacking with greater urgency and searching for the equaliser. The visitors were forced deeper as the Magpies increasingly dominated the final stages.
Bournemouth had opportunities to kill the game off, but their inability to do so once again proved costly.
The visitors have now developed an unwanted habit of surrendering leads. According to Reuters, Bournemouth became the first team to score first in each of their opening three Premier League matches of the season without winning any of those games. They have also dropped seven points from winning positions.
Newcastle eventually found their reward two minutes before the end of normal time.
Jacob Ramsey produced the decisive moment in the 88th minute, completing the comeback and sending St James’ Park into celebration. The midfielder, who has been frustrated by limited opportunities, made a major impact from the bench and demonstrated why he remains an important option for Jaissle.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-2 draw, but the result felt very different for the two sides.
For Newcastle, it was another demonstration of their resilience. The Magpies have now remained unbeaten under Jaissle, despite facing difficult moments in their opening fixtures. They had already drawn with Liverpool and defeated Tottenham before Saturday’s encounter, and the comeback against Bournemouth added another example of their ability to fight until the final whistle.
For Bournemouth manager Marco Rose, however, there was understandable frustration. His side had done enough for long periods to win the match but once again failed to protect a lead.
The Cherries dominated large portions of the contest and, according to The Guardian, registered 17 shots on target compared with just two for Newcastle. Yet the visitors left St James’ Park with only one point after conceding twice in the closing stages.
The match also provided a Premier League debut for Newcastle’s new signing Matias Fernández-Pardo, adding another storyline to an afternoon already packed with drama. The Belgian winger joined Newcastle from Lille in a major summer deal and was introduced as the Magpies searched for a way back into the game.
Ultimately, Newcastle will take encouragement from the character they showed. Being two goals behind at home could easily have resulted in a damaging defeat, but the response demonstrated the fighting spirit Jaissle appears to be building into his team.
Bournemouth, meanwhile, will have to find answers quickly. Their performances have shown promise, but repeatedly surrendering winning positions could become a serious problem if the pattern continues.
At full-time, Newcastle had rescued a point. Bournemouth had lost two.
And for the Magpies, the message from another comeback was simple: under Jaissle, they are not prepared to give up.
