In a decisive move to address the aftermath of severe flooding in Mokwa, the Niger State Government has announced a ₦7 billion contract for the construction of a 12-kilometre road linking Mokwa to Rabba, including the construction of four new bridges. The initiative aims to restore connectivity and prevent future isolation in flood-prone areas.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago disclosed this during his visit to communities affected by the disaster. The governor conducted an on-the-spot assessment and extended condolences to those impacted by the floods, which claimed lives and caused extensive damage to property worth millions of naira.
“The recent flooding has left parts of Mokwa cut off, creating an urgent need for intervention. Construction will commence immediately to ensure swift recovery and improved infrastructure,” Governor Bago stated. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while building more resilient communities.
To mitigate future incidents, the governor directed relevant ministries and agencies to carry out a comprehensive survey of the state’s waterways and terrain. The findings are expected to inform a relocation plan for residents living in high-risk areas along vulnerable coastlines.
“This government is determined to protect its citizens and their property. We must work together to create safer communities,” Bago said, urging residents to remain united in the face of adversity.
During his visit, relief materials were symbolically distributed to selected households in the affected region. Governor Bago also inspected Rabba, where a major bridge was washed away by the floods, and reassured residents of the government’s commitment to restoring critical infrastructure and providing support for recovery efforts.
The Niger State Government’s swift response underscores its resolve to address the challenges posed by natural disasters while prioritizing long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences.
