Nigeria signs MOU with Ericcsson to boost technological advancement
The Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ericsson, a renowned telecommunications giant on October 18, 2024, to enhance Nigeria’s technological capabilities and position the country as a global leader in 5G connectivity.
The VP stated, “the partnership aims at positioning Nigeria at the forefront of 5G adoption, significantly boosting national productivity and technological capabilities.
According to the report by Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), the event was witnessed by several dignitaries including Vice-President Kashim Shettima, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission, Aminu Maida, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who signed on behalf of Nigeria, and Mr. Peter Olusoji Ogundele,the representative of the esteemed telecommunications company who signed on behalf of the company.
Shettima, emphasized the necessity of considering all viable alternatives while investigating biofuel solutions for the nation’s transportation sector.
He also stressed that, “an inclusive approach is crucial to effectively addressing Nigeria’s complex transportation challenges
In addition, he said, “Nigeria’s exploration of biofuel solutions aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to transform the nation’s transportation sector into a cleaner and more efficient system, particularly with the recent focus on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
According to Erricson, “with the advent of 5G, the fifth generation of cellular networks, there is unparalleled performance, surpassing 4G speeds by a factor of 100, thereby creating opportunities for people, businesses and technology all over the world.
The Minister of Communication, Dr. Bosun Tijani emphasized the significance of the MOU expressing confidence that Nigeria will fully harness the potential of 5G technology to drive rapid economic growth and development.
Mr Bosun stated, “the MOU signed with Ericsson establishes an Innovation Lab focused on harnessing 5G technology to drive transformative solutions in agriculture, mining, education, and connectivity to improve our people’s standard of living.”
“I agree. The Renewed Hope Agenda aligns with our reforms, recognizing digital technology as vital for economic diversification.”
“The aim of the reforms is to diversify our economy, and it is obvious that we can not do that without the presence of digital technology.”
“Digital technology is crucial for management and planning of the nation’s oil economy.”
Shettima , during a briefing on the company’s technological developments, sought guidance on deploying 5G technology to enhance oil facility security, prevent theft, and curb pipeline vandalism.
